How to Strip Paint from an Antique Wood Door

Stephen and I bought a home last year that was built in the 1870s. We are absolutely in love with this property. It is full of amazing old features like 5 antique entrance doors. Yes you read correctly, 5! This is not a large house but certainly has some rich history to explain the need for so many doors in such a small house.

The problem with these doors is they do not provide a good barrier against the elements, which we quickly noticed during our first winter here. So unfortunately we have had to replace all the exterior doors in order to make our home more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

However, there is no way we are parting with these amazing doors. We are repurposing the doors inside our home in a new renovation where we are converting an empty space into 2 closets and a laundry room. In this video you will learn how we safely stripped years of paint off of these doors to get them ready for their fresh coat of paint.

The Dumond plastic wrap to help the paint stripper not dry out, can be substituted with normal plastic wrap such as Saran wrap. 🤓🤫 👍

Liked this video, had no idea it was so easy to strip old paint from a wood surface! I think this video will do well when people are searching for how to restore a wooden door, or something to that effect. One suggestion I would make for future videos is to mention and show which product you used since many viewers would probably like to know that!

Wow!! That is the most gorgeous front door! I am working on my 1800’s French doors that someone painted white and I will have to try peel away, they have sooo many nooks with each window. And the trick with the glass is amazing! I will have to try it on my front door glass also. Thank you for sharing! ❤

Im trying to strip an old door right now. Ive been using Klean Strip because I heard it was good but it doesnt seem to do as good for me as other videos I've seen. Spent 4 hours on one side, 3 hours on the other and im still not completely down to the bare wood, but I can see the grain one 1 side. The other side seems to have a yellow skin over the wood that the Klean Strip doesnt seem to break down, so Im thinking about just trying to sand it down to the wood. What would you suggest?
