I have an ankle foot orthotic, not a prosthetic but I have the same problem and I can confidently say: friend, you need to treat yourself to nice long shoe horn. Utterly life changing.

That only works if you are a below the knee amputee. For me, an above the knee amputee, it's a LOT easier to put the shoe on with the leg off because I have a much shorter residual leg so I have less leverage and strength to move my prosthetic which is much heavier and longer, plus I can't use my muscles to hold my knee still so it moves around. Instead, I turn the leg upside down, hold it between my thighs then use the floor as leverage.

My father was also an amputee. Thank you for making these videos. It answers lots of questions that people/ kids have always asked him.
Although his favorite was telling kids he left his leg at home. The reactions were always so funny and genuine.

You've also perfectly described why it's hard putting shoes on babies

I gotta say as a retired license physical therapist assistant you are doing a great service helping new amputees adjusting to post fitting and using prosthetics 😁

Amputee life hack: Bka here, I keep a plastic grocery bag stuffed in the sock of my prosthetic and if I put it on over my socked foot it allows me to put on types of footwear is i.e. high motorcycle boots, military style combat boots, etc. Hope this helps! Great video!

I love the title 😂 God bless! You’re so cool posting about this so us non-amputees and even other new amputees can learn the best way to do things and learn the facts! ✝️💖

Thank you for having the courage and patience to explain to us. Thank you to all the other amputees in the comments for discussing the challenges of dressing so openly. Thank you all for your positive attitudes!

I believe my friend you may not realize how many people you help by sharing your journey with others I think you are a great person that deserves recognition for sharing and helping others which reinforces why I served 24yrs in the US Military to protect and defend our home and others and would do it again !! You are a definite role model

Pro Tip: If you don't have a shoe horn and are having trouble getting a shoe on your prosthetic foot wrap the foot in a plastic grocery bag. It slides in much more easily than just a sock. Once the shoe is on tuck the bag into the shoe or slide it out. The bag makes it easy to get the foot back out too. This works great for boots which are usually the most hassle to get on a prosthetic foot.

When I was a kid in the 60's older gentlemen always had things (I believe they were called shoe horns) to help them put on boots and shoes. They held the shoe on the floor and there was a flat stick that you slid behind your heel that let your foot easily slide into the shoe. I bet those things would be helpful. I wonder why they stopped being popular... My mom is a new amputee. Thanks for all the great advice and for reminding of those contraptions. I'm going to try and find her one. 😀

One thing I don’t know if you’ve seen or many people have seen is there are companies who make everyday looking shoes that have zippers around the bottom so that they open kind of sideways. They are often worn for people with mobility issues and/or sensory issues who find it difficult to put a ‘normal’ shoe on or have a need to be able to get one off super easy. I can’t remember the name of the company I’ve seen though 😅

Hello as an amputee myself it's very refreshing to see someone online that's actually not in anyway embarrassed of having that.. I'm still working on that part... Thank you!!!

You got one hell of an awesome foot. Dang. You rock. I love how honest you are. Thanks. :)

Though the leverage does help there’s also the factor of its how you learned to do it in the first place so it’s a natural set of motions which makes it considerably easier to do
