Pronouns and a very gendered language | Lucien

As you may know, i live in a very gendered language (portuguese), in which it's not always easy as in english to navigate pronouns and everything else. So this is why i try to talk about ;)

I have a friend from Brazil who said that some people are starting to use -e as a gender neutral alternative to -o or -a endings, which seems quite nice to me :)

This is a cool perspective. I'm a native English speaker, but I'm majoring in Spanish, and whenever I'm in my classes I use the masculine endings to refer to myself, but nobody ever picks up on it, so it feels like I'm kind of just rebelling against gender expectations in a kind of secret way. (I don't read as anything but female on a regular basis, even though I'm nonbinary and masculine/neutral presenting). It's interesting to me because the vibe I always got from noun gender classifications was that it was just a way of classifying nouns, that specifies which set of articles or adjective endings could be used, and almost watered down the whole gendered-ness of the language. This video is an interesting change of perspective, to see how actually living with a very gendered language is frustrating. Additionally, the formal/formal third person pronoun in Spanish, usted/ustedes, as well as some other third-person pronouns (depending on the situation), aren't gendered on their own, which is a little less gendered than what's described about Portuguese.

i feel you!! i'm Polish and our language is as well veeery gendered. i havent found a way to speak gender neutral and coherent at the same time :/ i only sometimes mix female and male forms just like you ^^
well at least we can always think in English and communicate with English speaking friends in this language :') and study other gender neutral languages :)

I am Austrian so my everyday. language is german. and german is also a very gendered language. english is great in my opinion. it's so much more neutral!

Sigh. yes. I clicked this immediately. I speak in Spanish with my parents and my girlfriend's parents and the language is so gendered. Thanks for making a video about this.

I speak Spanish so I kind of gave up on speaking in a gender neutral way 24/7. I don't use they/them pronouns in English because in Spanish you can't change pronouns in the same way. I use gender neutral language as much as I can and then just mix and match the pronouns and/or endings of words when referring to myself. Also, for any Spanish speaker in the comment section, is there a gender neutral term for tía/tío? I need a nickname of some kind.

Oh yes...gendered language..-.-
I'm Austrian so my every day language is german. At least our verbs are not gendered but our nouns are and we have very pointless articels! For example: a tree has a male articel, a mug female and a glass is not gendered but that would sound very disrespectful if it would be used for a person. We can't use the equivalent to their becouse our "plural word" is the same as the singular "female word"..
I used to switch between male and female pronouns but after a while I felt uncomfortable and awkward with the female one so I use only male now.
We also have neutral pronouns with X and so on but I'm not really familiar with them and woudn't use them for myself becouse almost noone knows them.

Video topic: I would find it very cool if everyone would make a video about how it is to be non-binary in their county/state/area. Like how people in puplic respont to someone not fitting in the male and female boxes and so on. It would be very interesting and also useful for traveling!
