Dr Jim Reed, Graphite Chief Engineer at EDF Energy, talks through the role of the graphite core in our nuclear reactors in housing the fuel and control rods. Using a 1/4 scale model Jim illustrates how the graphite core is structured and the behaviours we expect over time.

One of the best memories of school was our physics class tour of our local AGR nuclear power station, now as a 40-something engineer part of my work is in the nuclear industry. It's a bloody shame that tours are no longer available - it's a fantastic example of British engineering.

Why do I see graphite on the roof? Graphite is only found in a reactor where it's used as a nutron flux moderator. Correct?
