Recipe: Chocolate Banana “Nice” Cream (Vegan Ice Cream) + Vitamix & Storage Tips

I love my sweets and anything with chocolate is at the top of my list! When we started on this whole food, plant-based journey, I thought I’d be giving all of that up, but this recipe proved me wrong! The best part is you only need THREE ingredients. It took me several tries to get the balance of ingredients JUST right – but I think I finally got it. I’d even pick it over “regular” ice cream! It’s that good.

I also share my tips for blending this in a Vitamix and using Tovolo mini "sweet treat" ice cream tubs to portion out and store it. Check out the link above for more details & tips.

I've been making nice cream for several years. I'm not vegan but I have a significant dairy allergy (gluten too). My favourite recipe is omit the cocoa but add 2 to 4 pitted dates, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and a little pink himalayan salt and your ice cream flavor is salted caramel peanut butter.

WeI make chocolate nice cream a lot too. Sometimes I use PB2 powder for a peanut butter nice cream. Swirl some strawberry chia jam through it for a PBJ. Another type we enjoy is chocolate cherry. Just add 1/2 cup frozen chopped cherries. You can sprinkle a few vegan chocolate chips on top.
Have you ever tried California Balsamic vinegars? They make a Chocolate Orange Balsamic which is really delicious drizzled on top of a chocolate nice cream.
Make a vanilla nice cream (just add a good vanilla bean powder) and top with sautéed apples/cinnamon/ginger. Drizzle with their Apple Pie Balsamic.
Last of all, if you have never tried it, freeze sweet potatoes (peel first and cut into ice cube sizes). Blend with almond milk and cocoa or maple syrup for a chocolate or maple flavor. You can also use frozen canned pumpkin and mix with pumpkin pie spices and almond milk. Can you tell we eat a LOT of nice cream? 😂

I made this today and hubby is delighted as he loved ice cream and can't have it now, it doesn't taste like bananas to us. Love the channel and great tips for us beginners.

I think it depends on how much almond milk you put into it. If you use really rich homemade almond milk it helps mask the banana flavor. Also, if you use Hershey's Special Dark cocoa powder it's VERY strong and helps cover up the banana flavor as well.

I always freeze my bananas peeled, but whole, so I can count them out as needed for various recipes. I find whole frozen bananas are actually very easy to cut with a knife, especially if they are very ripe. The high sugar content prevents them from freezing super hard. So I just chop them up frozen, right before using for any recipe.

I put my bananas whole neatly in the freezer bag and lay flat on counter. Then I take a plastic spatula and from the outside of the bag I "slice" by pressing down on the bananas. No fuss no muss! I place the freezer bag on a flat surface in the freezer until frozen. I use a plastic spring mix lid but a cookie sheet would work. The banana pieces come apart easily. I put 2" of frozen banana into my kale smoothies. I have fork mashed up half a frozen banana with dark cocoa powder for a fast chocolate dessert. Not as creamy but super easy.

Even if you can still taste a little banana in there, bananas and chocolate are great together.

Yummy 😊
My sister made something like this with her vita mix. It was like pineapple sorbet. Frozen pineapple, soy milk and a tablespoon maple syrup. It was luscious. I like your cute little cups. This will be perfect for my husband’s sweet tooth!

I know it's a bit of extra work, but when I freeze my bananas I break them up and put them on a cookie sheet(not touching each other) and then toss them in the freezer for like 30 mins to an hour and then I put them in a ziploc or Tupperware. That gives them a quick freeze shell essentially and so then they aren't all stuck together when you put them in your big ziploc. It's extra work, but makes it so much easier for me to add them to stuff!
Thanks for another great video! 😀

Thanks for this video! I just received my Vitamix today, and you solved the problem I was having. The mixture went past creamy to runny, you just explained why. I am new to the recipe and fooled around too long.I appreciate your Chanel and all I am learning. Keep us newbies informed thanks again.

Hey Jessica. Pro-tip: add 1/2 - 1 tablespoon of Tapioca Starch. really keeps the mix thick!
Best Wishes

Thanks so much for the informative video and the great tips!! I too have a Vitamix which stopped working after making chocolate banana nice cream actually! I tried leaving the Vitamix for 24-48 hours before trying to use it again, and thankfully, it was fine! I figured that the engine got too hot, and the safety mechanism that you spoke about kicked in, to allow the engine to start cooling down.
The other thing I wanted to share with you, is that I mix the measured chocolate powder with the milk, until it forms a nice paste. I add this to the blender FIRST with other ingredients (vanilla essence, maple syrup, cinnamon powder). This avoids the cloud of cocoa that you mentioned, and the extra work later to make sure everything is well incorporated, with no cocoa powder lumps! As the mixture just covers the blender”s blades, it makes for slightly easier work on the Vitamix, before you add in the chopped banana! With a few chocolate chips (or diced dates) and some chopped walnuts, this made for an amazing Rocky Road nice cream!
Good luck & happy blending! 😋🍦❤️

Hi! I made strawberry nice cream last night! It is AWESOME! Bananas, strawberries & soy milk. In my vitamix it came out perfect- great texture & not over-banana-y. Yum!
