Even teachers of traditional kung fu in China just wear track suits. Why do you feel the need to put on a costume? Anyways keep enjoying your practice.

I supose you wear a karate uniform because in Shaolin-do they wear karate uniform, and your "sifu" Sin Kwan The wear a karate uniform

Hi Jake, One of the first lessons I was taught is that in my style of gongfu we don’t use belts because martial arts is something we learn throughout life.

段 (だん) DAN or Black Belt Rank and 級 (きゅう) KYU or Non-Black Belt "Color Belt" Rank both belong to the Japanese Martial Arts Ranking System as it applies to 空手(からて) Karate (post 1930s Kanji). This Belt Ranking Systems comes from 内地 (なち) NAICHI or mainland Japan Martial Arts System. The 道義 (どうぎ) DOGI or Japanese Martial Arts uniform was also a mainland idea, it did not come from 沖縄 (おきなわ) Okinawa or the 琉球王国 (りゅうきゅうおくに) RYUKYU OO KUNI or Ryukyu Kingdom. The 武道の帯(ぶどうのおび) BUDO no OBI or Martial Arts Belt is also a Japanese mainland concept.

I'm not doing videos, I'm not trying to teach, like I said, I'm just annoyed by his videos that make no sense.

Jake, it was my understanding that Jigaro Kano, founder of Judo, invented the gi which was inspired by the firefighter smock worn in late 1800's Japan. It was also my understanding that Kano or one of his top students invented the coloured belt system (possibly inspired by colours in the game Go), and that prior to that only a dark belt or sash was used for functional reasons. Can you please point to research that supports your belief that coloured belts and gis are actually much older than that? Given the long rivalry between Japanese and Chinese martial arts, it seems that both sides have a reason to claim the origins of modern practices.

Actually, the cross top clothings aren't originating from Shaolin Monks. They're actually Hans clothing. The button down suits are Manchu fashion and was enforced after the Manchurian conquered the Ming Dynasty to form the Qing Dynasty and forced all the Hans civilians to abide to wearing the Manchu clothings and keep a pigstail / queue / cue hairstyle as a way to honour the Manchurians, losing the pigstail / queue / cue was considered a great dishonour and may be punishable by death. Somehow the monks were spared from wearing Manchurian clothings and need not keep the pigstail / queue / cue hairstyle, and they were allowed to continue wearing their monk's robes in cross top style and have all their heads shaved bald. Also, all the Shaolin Monks I've seen wore their robes with left over right, I've never heard of the theory of peaceful demonstration of crossing their tops with right over left. May I know where did you get your source of the story about right over left cross top from?

I train in mixed martial arts based around Jeet Kune Do and five animal Tao Chi Chuan but I am old and started my training in Kenpo then went on to a black belt in Shoring Ryu, also studied some Tae Kwuan Do as I moved from place to place to find work. Now, I just watch & practice with your videos & various wu shu forms or just try to spontaneously invent a form with maybe an emphasis on a particular technique or combination. Have learned so much and am so inspired by your life and work even as an old bag banger. Hope to join the school in the coming year. In the meantime will be working on your kicking videos, side straddle splits and your tonfa weapon form. Again, thanks so much for making my continued dedication to this art financially possible & so very rewarding.

hey I think you might not know that all kung fu and karate had been originated by the same martial arts known as kallari payattu which belongs to INDIA

I don't study martial arts, but I like to watch the instructional videos. I also like to read the comments, but when I do I'm always struck by how many angry uptight people are commenting, not just here but on virtually all martial arts and self-defense videos. Where does all the anger come from....

I think you simplify the history a little too much. Traditional karate of the Okinawan lineages is certainly influenced mostly by southern Chinese martial arts styles. However modern wushu is still a conglomeration of traditional Chinese marital arts styles, it is just that they are mostly northern styles. So they look very different more because of southern vs northern Chinese marital arts styles, rather that traditional vs non traditional. Of course there is also more flipping and gymnastics in modern wushu than the styles on which it is based, but that's not why the techniques and stances are so different to karate.

I use any technique that works, never limiting myself to one style, and keep an open mind. (Bloodsport reference :D) Seriously though I live in Seattle and began in Shudokan karate-do under Shihan Morris Mack when I was a teenager but now train in many styles.

I would love to welcome you in Germany to have a fight with you ... I am 40 years old. I began with Hapkido at age 10. 5 years doing Hapkido I began with boxing at same time. 10 years after boxing and Hapkido at age 25 I began with Muay Thai ... since 2002 I am training Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do and some other martial arts. But I am not a master, grand master or an e-training martial artist 😏 ... lets have some fun ... I will buy you the flight ticket to Germany when you are ready to have some sparring!

I would love to see what I can learn from you 🙄
