The Best Argument Against Veganism | Gary Yourofsky

What is the best argument against veganism? There is certainly a wide array of objections to the vegan lifestyle, but do any of them hold water? If you’re vegan or thinking about being vegan, chances are you’ve come up against more than one. Perhaps you’ve even posed some of them yourself in the time leading up to being vegan. In this interview I ask vegan activist Gary Yourofsky in all his years of experience, what is the best argument against veganism? While legitimate questions and concerns from non-vegans can serve as teaching moments and are valuable opportunities for education, some anti-vegan arguments are purely baseless and made only to provoke. For those honestly curious, well-intentioned individuals genuinely wanting to know if this way of life is possible, I will always have time and patience.

"I don't care" was the argument you couldn't combat, then try asking "when did you stop caring?"

Agreed. Most people consider vegans "annoying" or "controversial" because it is hard to argue against the truth and since they have no solid arguments, they'll get defensive and shut down.

I was actually thinking about this yesterday. I have been vegetarian for more than a year and vegan for less than a month. I started for health, but then I realised the animals and the environment are terribly affected too when we choose to eat animal products. I have been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years now. I tried to explain how bad animal products are for everyone (including him health, animals and the environment) but I got really sad when he said he just didn't care. There is no way to make someone care. So I just try to be a good example and he has to cook his own meat.

I must say that I just watched Earthlings and I'm officially going vegan. I have not eaten any beef or pork for 8 years for health reasons but after watching that documentary it makes me sick seeing how these animals are treated just for human pleasure. No transitioning here, I'm going cold turkey I can not fathom eating another animal.

what sucks is that "i don't care" is basically a translation of all the other arguments and they just don't want to admit it.

the most common two arguments i'm having atm is that meat eaters still believe they are 'anti animal cruelty' but still eat meat.. and that the videos on how animals are slaughtered are only propaganda and scaremongering.

Last night at work a guy asked me "Youre the vegan right?" and I replied "right" and he said "That's so amazing. I couldn't be vegan because I like my protons too much." I was speechless. My roommate said I should have asked him about his electronlytes. My friend said at least he was positve... I love my friends, lol.

What a shame...I thought it would be interesting to find out what a vegan considers the strongest argument against their position (and presumably, how they would respond to it). "We're just 100% right and any other view is 100% wrong, " isn’t exactly deep or thought-provoking.

this is so true!! today my stepmom saw my vegan macncheese and was like, "why do vegans always have to make vegan versions of food" and i responded, so that non-vegans don't have to feel like they're giving up anything by eating vegan and also when have you ever found cheese powder in nature? She had absolutely no response, ignored what I said completely, and walked away. LOL

me say that I LOVE Gary Yourofsky and appreciate what's he's done in the past 18 years. He's the reason I went 100% Vegan 2 years ago. Yes, he converted me and I'm so thankful. I do however REALLY hope I do not become as angry as he is. I can feel his angry energy and I completely understand why he has this inner anger. I can't imagine the suffering he's seen in 18 years, or the countless arguments he's come up against with ignorant people. He's done so much, but I imagine it's difficult to have inner peace when you are fully aware of the sufferering happening. want to remain happy and softer, while still spreading the message. I've also adopted Gary's rule. I won't eat with anyone unless they will have a vegan meal with me and my friends and family have no issues with doing this. We have many fantastic Vegan restaurants popping up in Niagara Falls Canada....whoop whoop and I can cook an AWESOME vegan meal that impresses.
Thank you bite size vegan. I think you ROCK!

I was neutral about vegetarians and vegans. But, upon further research and developing an informed opinion and listening to all sides, I now have the UTMOST respect for them and environmentalists. I salute you all.... not only are those mindsets beneficial for other species; the ecosystem we are a part of, but also on a personal level and sustaining our species and creating equity. A shame about the greedy mainstream corporate media, who have stripped people of their critical thinking. At the end of the day, if the movements or practices is beneficial on both a macro and micro level, that will sustain us for the long term, why do we have to make all these excuses? The only gripe I have is with the increase of vegans and vegetarians is there'll be less demand for meat and more unemployment and economic chaos, as the industry is gigantic. Which I realise is the point, but should people really lose their livelihood as a consequence? I will probably go vegan soon.

The only argument against veganism is taste. And do not say, its not logical because that doesn´t matter.  Humans do the strangest - not even logical -  things only to have fun. Some people jump from high buildings and call it fun. FOR ME it won´t be fun.

I´m a vegan, by the way. But not for my whole life. And I loved und love the taste of meat - but the arguments for veganism are strong enough for me to do not eat meat. Now.

The best argument is that people get addicted to food. So their addiction is something they need to overcome. Before I went vegan I was definitely addicted to animal foods and I had to just QUIT. Like quitting smoking. This is a valid argument, but most people don't know their addicted.

as a vegan myself, i can see some logical arguments for eating meat, mostly the argument that it is natural and that humans are omnivores. although some vegans will tell you we are really herbivores this is kind of a weak argument considering we can eat meat. plants are better for you mostly, but most cultures eat meat in some form. i think that raising animals for slaughter is unethical and you should not eat meat if you don't have to, but i dont think its unnatural. dairy and eggs are different story, but for sure eating meat is something natural to humans, although not in the quantities that humans eat in the west.

If my non-vegan husband says bacon one more time when i try a new vegan meal on my family I swear I will start spitting in his coffee.

I'm probably going to write a book full of comebacks against veganism and science supporting veganism because I've only been vegan for almost a year and I've heard so much shit being repeated over and over and over and over again. I'm just gonna carry around a book and when people ask me questions I can reply without thinking hard at all and trying to remember facts

If being vegan is healthy...why did I do nothing but revolve my entire life around my diet, read and research what to eat, yet felt weak, sick, and fainted 3 times!? I tried and tried yet nothing changed. I feel like a new person now that I eat grilled seafood and eggs again :D I'm not going to sacrifice my health to save a life of an animal! It's called nature!

I've been vegan now for 4 months and I love it! I'm 35 and wish I would've done this from birth. I feel like punching meat eaters in the face who argue with me how healthy meat is now. I never realized how ignorant and unintelligent people really are, you meat eaters are so pathetic. Had my first vegan burger and it was the best burger I have ever ate. Thx to you, Vegan Gains, and Jon Venus I've added many more healthier years to my life, you guys rock!

Sadly I know a woman who told me : "When I saw the pictures of animals in slaughterhouses, when I saw the videos made me sad but then at the time of eat I don't care. "At that moment I understood that not everyone has the quality of compassion, not everyone thinks of others. I have to admit I felt sorry for her as a person who thinks so is a person rotten inside.
