THANKS! this really helps me a lot because i'm a freelance videographer and i've been having trouble with bad sound quality from my on-board camera microphone, especially on weddings and corporate events.

This is really clever! Great feature. I've been fighting with shotgun mics for a little while now. Affordable consumer mics just aren't that good, and there's a huge leap in quality and price between consumer shotguns and professionally oriented gear. The backup recording on top of the direct feed is a nice convenience, too!

So far I've hooked up to my Panasonic HCV770. For that, I recommend turning the internal camcorder levels all the way down to -30. -27 should be okay but you'll start getting some preamp hiss at that point. This camcorder is super sensitive in that regard. For the H1n's LINE OUT level, I set it at 22, and then the gain at 8. With that I was able to get good capture from subjects nearby but also minimize the preamp hiss. Depending on your needs you should be able to use a little more gain or a little more LINE OUT volume and only take on an editable amount of hiss.

Thank you. Tried it with my Canon T3i - works perfectly. With the "Lantern Firmware" you can also use a common Headphone. So you can control the input like a "Pro" .

wow.. thanks so much. i've been struggling with trying to get a good sound with this combination. louder on the recorder or camera and so on and i couldnt tell what was really the weak spot. it was clearly the cameras gain being up too high and not enough volume output from the zoom. look forward to this. great video thanks John!

Don't forget the clap at the beginning of your filming, it will makes it easier at editing stage to sync as you will see a big spike in the drawing of your waveform when your hands join & clap. Beware of possible drift over a recording lasting a long long time.

John this is exactly the setup I was looking for as I already have the Zoom Hn1 mic, very well explained I didn't know about the pass through to the camera. You saved me a lot of money, thanks!
Took me about 2 mins to get everything working with my Sony A7III, the tip for the Zoom audio signal generator was awesome. This video +100.

This is quite excellently explained. I'm a total noob at this just looking to understand first of all what I need and how these things work. It makes perfect sense and it's a good demo as well, thank you.
