Pretty bad model? It's better than I could do!

I think it'd be cool to see this develop into something further.
If you do, one suggestion I have is making the box rotate towards the player when grabbed and making the chain appear from the hand. Also, make sure you add that game JUICE.
I personally think this project has loads of potential and it'd be fun if that box was some kind of bomb that you could swing at oncoming enemies. That way: you'd keep the scope quite small and have a finished project to further keep you motivated.

Really well laid out devlog, flowed super nicely and I liked your technical explanations that you included as well as the fails that you encountered.

Keep at it, man! Look forward to more.
