A Friendly Garter Snake

Worked during the summer at a cemetery to pay for my engineering studies. While using a weed whacker to trim away long grass along a tombstone a lawnmower missed, I accidentally killed a garter snake. When I realized there was a snake there, it was already too late. I was devastated. What made it worse was the fact it was a pregnant female based on the developing eggs that spilled out the body. Female coworker saw how distraught I was and helped me bury it under a nearby tree. Felt horrible for days. After that, I would always look a few feet ahead whether it was mowing or trimming. Prevented me from running over a couple of toads.

Most garter snakes are friendly. Posing no threats to anyone whatsoever 😁 when you see them DON’T kill them. Leave them be and let them get on with their snake lives 😁

I have like a million garter snakes next to my papas house and their so cut. I pick them up all the time, they do pee and poop on my hands so i like to wear gloves.

These snakes are just laid back.. Curious bordering on friendly. Walked out just yesterday and their was a juvenile just hanging out on my front steps in the sun. I slowly sat down and very gently picked him up.. lol He just just stared at me. Never deployed the odor defense. He literally sat on my knee for 5 or so minutes. Their my pals. They take care of the Palmetto bugs and my other pal the Black Snake is in charge of rodent control. In 25 years living here never seen a mouse.

Many years ago when I still a kid, I used to have a garter snake that lived in my backyard. I would have never known about it if it weren’t for my mom. She was out there doing something and she said she saw some movement out of the corner of her eye. When she looked, she saw a massive garter snake slithering through the grass. I didn’t see it. I’m pretty sure it was a female because it was thick and very long from head to tail. We all decided to leave her alone because she had probably lived there for years and she never bothered us before then. A year or two later, we found her passed away on the sidewalk outside of our house. We knew it was the same one because my mom identified her. Thankfully, we think she passed away of natural causes. We don’t think anyone had killed her because we couldn’t find any injuries

Lucky to find him, I go out for a 30 minute walk everyday looking for snakes and rarely find one.😅

Most garter snakes calm down after you have bothered them long enough for them to be at their limit but also enough for them to realize their act isn't scaring you away.

Of course this doesn't stop them from biting you in between that time so if you do make sure to clean the cut so it isnt infected.

A few days ago I saw a baby. I didn’t know what snake it was, but remembered it was a garter. Specifically an eastern garter. I found him when lifting our football. Right under, was a baby Eastern Garter Snake. I held him and he kept running for shade. I left him though and haven’t seen him since 😂
Edit: Just found an adult in my backyard. Tried to bite me 😂
