A little story behind this song (if you didn't see this from the audio version):

When I was around 10 years old, I watched my teenage brother nurse a wound. He was crying as he soaked his scraped knee with water in the bathtub.

I looked at him with disdain. "Why are you crying?" I asked in annoyance.

I didn't realize it then, but my visceral reaction to his emotional vulnerability reflected something that I had been taught earlier in my childhood: boys aren't supposed to cry.

When I became a young adult, I had a lot of trouble expressing my emotions. I put on a smile for everyone I saw, and avoided talking about anything that would trigger an emotional reaction. When my emotions built up to the point where I couldn’t control them, I would explode. It took a long time to learn how to share my feelings - something that people still consider to be a sign of weakness in men.

I think I’m one of the millions of men out there who’ve been told, at some point in their lives, to repress their emotions. I now understand how emotional repression can lead to a variety of complications in mental health. I wrote this song to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, and to challenge the idea that men shouldn’t show their feelings simply because they are men.

For all the guys out there listening to this song - be vulnerable. Feel your emotions. Share with others how you feel. I think that’s even more manly than being a tough guy.

Thanks, man. There's a desperate shortage of things like this, and each and every single one of them is appreciated. I'm lucky enough to have an emotionally supportive wife and mother (never really had a dad until now in my mid 20s) and it helped me be more rounded as a person.

It hurts to think about people raised like this. Being tough is something you need to be able to turn off and on when you need it. It doesn't have to be a personality trait. It's a skill.

Moral: Our society teaches children "Mard ko dard nehi hota" When their child boy cry, the parents hit him and say 'Boys Don't Cry'. They teach the boys to not have feelings. They teach boys not to feel sadness, or happiness. But the Society expects them to be lovable, loyal, caring after not letting them feel any happiness. They expect boys to only Give Give Give but Take nothing. But in reality, boys are also human. Boys feel sad too. I've always thought about how guys are taught to hold in their emotions. I think it's dumb. They shouldn't have to keep it in. Just because you show emotion doesn't mean you aren't strong or masculine. Nobody should have to hold emotions in.
