British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was questioned on comments he made about Northern Ireland's 'special access' to both EU and UK markets during prime minister's questions on Wednesday (March 1).

While speaking to business leaders in Belfast on Tuesday (February 28) Sunak said his new Brexit deal, which he announced alongside negotiated EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, made Northern Ireland 'the world's most exciting economic zone' with special access to both the UK's and European markets.

Sunak, a self professed Brexiter, drew criticism from political commentators for the comment.

During Prime Minster's Questions in London, leader of the Scottish National Party Stephen Flynn questioned Sunak on the remarks, which Sunak rebuffed by saying his deal is aiming to get ''the right mechanisms in place to support businesses and communities in Northern Ireland.''

Sunak's deal l seeks to resolve the tensions caused by the Northern Ireland protocol, a complex agreement which set the trading rules for the British-governed region that London agreed before it left the EU in 2020, but now says are unworkable.
