Hello....Hallo....Guten Tag! Are these really weird? I feel like I have been in Germany too long because these things seem a little "normal" LOL

Here in Norway you get free still water at restaurants. But only because our tap water is so good that we export it as bottled water (Voss).

In Austria if you order a coffee and ask for a small glas of tap water, they will glad give it to you for free. A lot of times u even get it without asking.

How these issues are in Finland:

1. Restrooms are mostly free, but there can be those that require a payment. But the pay-toilets are usually those that are standalone toilets, which means they're not in another establishment, like a restaurant, a gas station etc. No restroom attendants or other personnel either.

2. Still water is always free in a restaurant (at least in all the places I go to) and is very common to drink and is readily available to have.

3. In private residences there's usually no air conditioning. Considering we usually have a 1 month summer (when it might actually get hot) it's not so much needed either. But it is becoming more common, mainly because of air conditioning systems that can heat up you home as well, since we have a bigger need of keeping warm than getting colder.

4. We don't usually do small talk, at all and we are reserved. Not all of us, but in my opinion there can be a generalisation that Finns don't do small talk and are reserved, even by European standards.

5. Conformity. Some might say yes, but I claim that Finns do not conform in masses. You can see all kinds of weird looking people all around and most people I know are pretty strong personalities and people tend to be really straight forward in what they think etc.

6. Cigarette smoking - more than Americans, but it's less and less common as time goes by.

7. Ice can always be had if asked. Usually comes with the drink if it's soda water or lemonade. But not insane amounts. Waiters may also ask if you want your drink with or without ice.

8. Speedos. Younger people normally don't wear them on beaches. Indoor pool may require to have them because of hygiene.

9. Sports hooliganism. Not a thing in Finland as far as I know of.

About ice: I personally don't like it because it dilutes the taste.
If I drink a soft drink or whatever, it's because I want to taste it.
If I'm just thirsty and I'm not interested in the taste, I'll drink water.
In either case, there is no need for ice, as long as you keep it in the fridge for a few minutes.
I guess ice would be useful if you want something cold and you have nothing in the fridge - but that should not be an issue in a restaurant.

I think the thing about not lying about smoking here, its because people think, i am who i am and i do what i do, and i dont have to lie about smoking because people accept you the way you are. No one would lie about eating a chocolate bar or drinking, so why should someone lie about smoking. It is just a personal choice, nothing someone has to be embarrassed of. Maybe the lying/not confessing of smoking could be a typical american thing because the people are used to being judged, so they try to hide about how they really are. Maybe thats also why europeans don't small talk that much, because that feels like it's just "being nice on the surface".

Oh yes...wearing speedos is so weird to Americans. And yes paying to use restrooms is totally weird BUT they are mostly clean here in German and many public restrooms in the USA ARE NASTY! :P

In Germany we don't need air conditioning because we have mostly very good isolated houses and we have perfected durchlüften.

France never gives sparkling by default and you get free water at restaurants too.

One of the few things where Sweden differs from Germany. You will get water without evil eyes, and in most places it is free (if order with a meal). And if you ask for water they will not bring sparkling, they will either bring tap water or more likely ask if you want sparkling or still.

In Portugal if you go to a coffee shop or a bakery the water is free as well. They even have jars for people pour themselves water, most often than not. Even though you can ask for a glass or water at the restaurant and they won't charge, we typically ask for individual or large bottles of water, which we pay for.

In most countries in Europe, it is actually illegal to deny a thirsty person (tap)water, however restaurants are allowed to charge for the service, cleaning etc that is why you usually have to pay for the water, also many serve bottled water which is not covered by the thirsty person rule.

Hey Hayley! 00:56 - the UK is still in Europe (geological location). The UK is just not in the European Union anymore. We are also Europeans 😋

Clean Water and water in general 💧 is a right Europe DONT screw it up for the rest of us like Nestle

Dear Haylay, I agree with your comments, but ist all about quite minor issues. As an European I find only a few things weird in the US: No public healthcare - voter suppression - cops behaviour - uncontrolled access to assault rifles.

In France it is forbidden to swim in a public pool wearing anything different than speedo style swimming trunks. Really...

I think the difference about the criticising is, the stuff Americans find problematic in Europe are not seen as problematic by most Europeans, while the things Europeans critisise about America are constantly complained about by Americans as well, like health care and gun violence. But I get that our tendency to lash out that way must feel annoying.

Older native German here: The thing to gave Americans a reply criticize is most of the time nothing more than destroying the American socle on which "Muricans" normally stand. IMHO it is nothing that would apply to folks like you (I rate you as an American girl and not as a Murican girl and these are, at least to me, two opposide mindsets). With the water in Europe, I support your opinion (I had to pay for it in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain (I'm the German who never was at any of the Balearen islands), Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and in all Scandinavian nations). For the AC or at least a ceiling fan the European rule is as following around the Mediterranean sea it is a common thing and the Alps marks the border between AC/fan land and the "no we did not need such things" nations. I would even bet some coins that I never had an AC room in any Hotel in Stockholm or Helsinki.
