Grouper Fishing Setups and Essential Gear

Grouper fishing requires special gear that can handle powerful fish that dig hard and try to cut you off in structure. I had to stop by St Pete Fishing Outfitters to see what they would recommend this year for a high quality gag grouper fishing setup to winch up big gags in Tampa Bay.

Cool. I'm in ohio but grew up in SC neat the coast. I just bought a bunch of used rods and reels... this guy had several penn 750ss reels that were never used and I got a 6'6" penn slammer rod super stout.. I'll save this combo and eventually go grouper and shark fishing with it... I got the 750s for 40 bucks a piece and they are unused lol. 30 for the rod... never used as well... what a deal... o and these penn reels were made in usa baby!

The first combo with the talica 16 looked more like a trolling setup for pelagics. Even had roller guides and it looked like it had a slick butt.

The Talica 16 holds over 800 yards of 50lb braid.

I had to listen to that second guy twice, when he was talking about the bait you could use. I missed the "bait" part, so I thought he was talk about what you could catch with that rod. He said "mullet, ladyfish". It was like, ?🤨 dude catches mullet with that thing? 🧐 oh he's talking about bait. 😅"

Definitely do not want a bottom fishing rod with roller guides. In the gulf where we are there’s really no reason to use a rod with roller guides even when trolling.

Why do they like to use mono over braid. I’ve had so much more success with braid with flouro carbon out of port canaveral

I must laugh at drag numbers. Unless youre planning on using the rail of the boat try picking up a bucket with 10# of water in it. It takes a beef stick to get lift . My 9 ft bridge rod for snook is 60-120 rated. Getting anything over 20 up and over the rail is work.
