Thank you! Finally someone is looking at this situation from the liquor store owner.

Both of my local stores I frequent have told me the exact same thing...

I like my control state. You have to wait in line but you can get great bottles at retail. My shelf is stocked. I couldn't believe the Kentucky prices when I was there.

It depends on the liquor store. I'm in NW Indiana and have a plethora, bet you didn't expect that word, of stores to buy from. All are different regarding prices.

Free market system would have the junk bottles left at the distillery. Instead, these are the bottles from barrels that didn't make the cut for older products/higher demanded products. I have no evidence; however, I believe that the distributors got better pricing on the "Highly Allocated Liquor (HAL)" buy taking on the crap bottles. It has to be passed on to the retailer, with them same inducements structure and a profit margin for the distributor. The problem with this system is that, like most other highly desired products, those who can pay the price and aren't worried about the masses.

San Francisco ypu can get Eagle Rare for $32, BT for $21, EHT for $50. I bet i saw 50+ bottles of BT my last trip out

It’s the combination of everything but it’s mainly secondary market. If people weren’t buying at insane prices, stores/manufacturers/etc wouldn’t have the leverage they do today. I always encourage people to buy accessible bottles for that reason. There’s way too many good stuff sitting on shelves to pay 100-1000% mark ups.

Yup. Same story everywhere. Small store in my area said they’re going to stop trying to get allocated stuff cuz they can’t sell off the bottles they make them buy cases and cases of. He told us he just wants to sell what the average person will buy. He said the distributors promise but never deliver.

Also. Most stores that can get allocated stuff usually have friends or family that have first dibs. Public usually gets no access.

If there are plenty of us buying it for so much money...we are at fault as well!!!

Supply and (internet hyped) demand + a dropping dollar value = More dollars for the goodies you want.

There are so many incredible bottles that aren’t allocated. So much of allocated whiskey is no better than what’s available all the time. Unless you have to have the rarest whiskey, it doesn’t make sense to over pay

Liquor stores are in business too make money and create sales. Not hoard allocated or rare product. Shelf space being taken up by a row of allocated bourbon at secondary prices is space for other products that can sell at a higher volume. They would rather sit on a bottle that sells msrp for 100, but marked up to 1500 or even 2000 for months. All while if you just sold 5 cases of Jack Daniel’s it’ll make the difference in half the time. Most liquor stores are acting like Gollum about their precious liquor. It should be sold at msrp and drank by everyone. Not just people will to spend 2k on a 100 dollar bottle.

Everyone in the chain has fault, but I mostly blame the consumer. If we pay the crazy prices, they will continue to charge it. I stopped paying it long ago. Too much good stuff that's reasonably priced to pay extra for so called unicorns. Just my opinion 🤷🏽‍♂️

Any store owner who has everything at high prices is doing so by choice. Blaming the market is an excuse to make bigger profits.

I think it's the fault of people who pay the crazy prices. Also I think the distilleries should send out secret shoppers to find out what stores are jacking up the prices and blacklist them.

I’m not going to say all distributors are shady but the facts are all there, just saying.
The three tier system is out of touch and date

Stop buying the over priced liquor and see what happens.

I heard one liquor store had to pay a fee of $10, 000+ just to get allocations. That’s why they have to markup so high.

This small liquor store owner from Los Alamitos, CA did tell me he has to sell so many thousands of dollars a month just to get the allocated juices. If he did go with that deal, his business would have been shut down a long time ago.
