Homework question

a + ar + ar^2+ = a (r^n -1 )/r-1, prove this by principle of mathematical induction

Soln= P(n): a + ar + ar^2+ a(r^n-1)/ r-1

Step1 (basic step) : P(1):- a = a
Which is true.

Step 2 ( Inductive step ) : let P(k) is true and we have to prove that P(k+1) will also be true .

P(k) : a + ar + ar^2+ a( r^k -1)/r-1

P(k+1) :- a + ar + ar^2+ = a(r^k+1-1)/r-1
= a + ar + ar^2+ ar^k-1 + ar^k
= a(r^k - 1 )/ r-1 + ar^k
= ar^k - a + ar^k(r-1)/ r-1
= ar^k - a + ar^k+1 - ar^k/ r-1
= a^k+1 - a / r-1
= a ( r^k+1 -1)/ r-1 = RHS

Solution:
P(n): a + ar + ar² ar^n-1 = a(r^n - 1 )/(r-1)

Step-1
P(1) : a = a(r-1)/(r-1) =a
a=a which is also true .

Step-2
let, P(k) is true and hence P(k+1) also be true .

Now, P(k) = +ar^k = a(r^k+1 -1)/(r-1)

P(k)=a (r^k-1)/(r-1) + ar^k
P(k) = a(r^k+1 -1)(r-1) is true


By using, Principle of Mathematical induction, P(n) will always be true for all natural 'n'. (Proved)
