Live recording of a performance given by members of the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble at the Chris Seabrooke Music Hall, Wits University, Johannesburg, on April 1 2023 - the 150th Anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s birth.
The Romanze and Scherzo comprise the two movements of his unfinished first string quartet, written in 1889-1890 when he was only 17. The arrangement for string orchestra was made a year later, and the first performance took place at the Moscow Conservatory the same year, but the score of that version was subsequently lost.
The version which the Ensemble is performing is a reconstruction of the original.
The Buskaid Music School is situated in Diepkloof Soweto, and offers high quality string tuition to the local, less privileged community.
Buskaid celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2022.
