£15k for a bomb is peanuts in a war. Owners should contact UA24 to see if they want to buy their Toyota H² cars for cost price to utilise.

It seems that I owe Toyota an apology. I've been saying that the Mirai was a useless hunk of technology. I stand corrected.

First the old pickups now this. Toyota seems to have a knack for (accidentally?) making great stuff for low-cost warfare.

I remember describing to people a couple of years ago why hydrogen is an inherently bad idea in cars. It has to do with both it can leak through metal (hydrogen atoms essentially are protons with an electron somewhere out there) and requires a very low energy of activation, as in how hard it is to get a fire or explosion going. Many hydrogen reactions require minuscule amounts of energy to get going, this is why Sparks in natural gas facilities are so very, very BAD.

The combustion range of hydrogen is 4-70%, so pretty much any mix of hydrogen and air can explode with a spark.

My I contention has been that hydrogen was merely a means for Exxon and other oil majors to stay in the vehicle fuel business. However, economics and physics do not support a hydrogen economy.

And there was me thinking they were only good as boat anchors 🤔

You don’t really need a car to build a hydrogen bomb, but combined with FSD, they become land based drones. And you only have to fill them up once👍

I see Toyota still has a foot in the door of the arms trade. Good for them!

Used Mirais in the So Cal area are selling from $2k to $3k once the hydrogen card runs out

Imagine that if mirai + FSD = guided hydrogen bomb. Bet toyota can provide the FSD tech

An excerpt from a November 2023 study entitled « Reenacting the hydrogen tank explosion of a fuel-cell electric vehicle: An experimental study ». Due to the pressure wave generated by the explosion of the hydrogen container, the rear of the vehicle lifted approximately 1.5 m from the ground. The front of the vehicle (ahead of the driver's seat) was tilted 15°, and the rear of the vehicle was moved to the east by approximately 2 m. The exterior metal plates of all the car's doors flew off, and the bonnet opened and closed along with the explosion. All combustible materials inside the vehicle were burned, and glass parts melted, flowed and cracked.

Sam

There are fundamental issues why hydrogen cars are not viable.

1) Hydrogen leakage
the biomedical industry uses helium to test for hermetic seal leakage of implantable electronics (pace makers, cochlear implants etc) because it is so hard to contain. Hydrogen is even less viscous than helium. Guaranteeing hermaticity of the containment and delivery system over the life of a car with temperature cycling and vibration is a nightmare.

2) Gas Tank Fatigue
Think the recent Titan carbon fibre deep see diving vessel collapse. Eventually after repeated pressurisation , carbon fibre vessel suffers fatigue. There would be repeated mandatory vessel testing and certification costing maintenance money, similar to LPG tank certification testing and costs.

3) Valve Burn.
car engines run at high temp. Exhaust valves burn out. LPG engines run at higher, drier temp, go to any engine head reconditioner, LPG burnt head exhaust valves outnumber petrol engines. Hydrogen burns dry and even higher temperatures. Translates to shorter mileages to burnt exhaust valves. Did any one think that problem through?

4) hydrogen induced metal embrittlement.

As said elsewhere, the physics and economics for a hydrogen economy don't make sense. Twiggy (Forrester) has finally seen the light and has pulled the plug on his hydrogen ideas; not commercially feasible.

Sam, if you were old enough to have witnessed attempts by earl adoptors to get battery transport happening, you would have seen similar outcomes. Fifty years later & we have a great product.

I don't think that's what they meant when they said a hydrogen bomb.
