Ya you can indeed make a tap on the lathe just make sure its a harder material than what your tapping.

Grinding a tool bit to ID thread would be a lot quicker. Just saying.

surprised he hasnt made himself a toolpost grinder rather than ruin all that good work attempting to sharpen with an angle grinder...

as for hardening... make a simple ZVS induction heater, pop the shaft in the spindle of a drill press or something, drop it through the coil nice and slow straight into a pot of oil... prevents the warp you get trying to heat a whole bar with a flame, and reduces the inevitable distortion when quenched.

this is what gets me. go to the effort of cutting a custom tap, then just sort of wave your hands and skip over the most important aspects of the whole job.

I've done a lot of things to make and cut threads but it still doesn't make a device I used a tap. Jerry rigging something is a clever kludge of necessity. Well done

I just used the lathe to cut the internal thread, i didnt need to make a tap first… i wouldnt be too proud of the threads finish either, but id have to know the material first.
