I used to work in 3rd party collections.... trust me. NEVER EVER even SPEAK to them on the phone. They are not attorneys but are paid to passively trick people into thinking they are. Every single thing you say on the phone with them is recorded and documented and will be used to obtain a court judgement against you. All you have to do is say anything along the lines of "I am refusing to pay" or whatnot. Or they try to argue with you with the intent of tripping you up on your own logic in order to get you to say something to be used as evidence in court that you owe the debt and therefore can be sued for collectors are not your friends. They're basically underpaid legal assistants.

My wife had a credit card bill that went into collections, which she ignored hoping the statute of limitations would work in her favor. Last month, that collection agency took $600 from our checking account under a garnishment order. We had no idea that was coming! If you ignore them, they will file for a garnishment and win!
