CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After having one too many drinks during Sam's (Tobey Maguire) funeral, Hank (Sam Shepard) condescends and insults Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

Haters gonna hate. Obviously this movie wasn't a masterpiece, but it was a good one especially considering the circumstances. Its dramatic element was taken a bit over the top at times, but what impressed me the most about this movie was the acting. This movie could've sucked big time but it was held together by rock solid performances by maguire, portman, and gyllenhal(in particular).

Ah yes, the military father. We have a saying in my family. "Dad did three tours in Vietnam, but he brought Vietnam back with him, forcing the family to serve more than just three." If we ever tried to call the cops when he was..."Educating"... us on why everything was our fault after he hammered a case of beer and he would "issue" correction of said error through "physical stimulation", the promise he always made was that we would be dead before the police could get there if we attempted to call the police. He even tried to snap my mom's neck one night and he put her in the hospital, she had to get a spinal fusion in her neck to fix the damage. I had my hand broken once when I was 13 because I was handcuffed and he was beating me with a hockey stick. All i could do was block the hits with the edge of my right hand and I stepped in front of my younger brother so I could take his hits too. Awesome childhood, 10 out of 10 would do it again...

this movie hits hard when your in the brink of not loving your father like you used to. Especially when they’re so manipulative & always picking a fight on you. IM 21 years old & i bet every boy at my age can understand when your the only boy throughout your siblings & the oldest.
