I use in the early spring (in the Netherlands) a 10” pike swimbait to get some territorial swipes and it seems to catch the biggest fish in the lakes

Love Pike fishing, also make great fish pattie with smoked bacon. One lure that outperforms other ones for me in sunny spring day is 3/4 gold Cleo spoon or similar. You just have to go super agressive and drop for second.

I'm just getting back into fishing. I used to fish exclusively for pike (the bass up in NY don't get big). I recall 3 lures were pretty much mainstays for me: Spoons (Daredevil or knockoff versions), Spinnerbaits (not the Inline type) and the Rapala Husky Jerk. The Husky Jerk was so deadly. Like you said, letting it just sit motionless on a jerk & pause retrieve. They couldn't resist. We used to put Suspend Dots on the lure, testing it in an aquarium to make sure it suspended perfectly. We'd replace the treble hooks with the Gamakatsu brand treble. Good times. And yes, live bait IS cheating!!

Thank you Steve for your tips on how to make your own steel leaders. I picked up the same line as you and was amazed how stealth these can be.
Great tip!

In the spring I only use two baits for pike; swimbaits and hard jerkbaits. In the summer I use spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, sometimes bucktails or a suick. Fall I go back to jerkbaits and swimbaits.

Great video! My first choice is also a paddletail swimbait, for sure. Last year I had incredible results throwing one with an underspin. The pike couldn’t resist it.

Wow I'm from Oregon .. now I'm in Arizona .. I've always wanted to fish for pike but not a lot of places to attack pike in Oregon, I'm going to be bank fishing a lake called lake Mary in northern Arizona .. some decent sized pike live in that water, so I'm kind of excited ..a little disappointing that I do not currently have a boat .. but I have no shame in casting out from a bank if I have to .. excellent video .. I definitely will take your top 5 into consideration .. thanks

Yo! I almost fell out of my chair when I realized you didn’t include ANYTHING that spins. No spinnerbait, no Mepps, no silver spoon. But seeing you catch big fish on big paddle tail swimbaits and flukes might give me the confidence to try some of that this year.

Very Nice Video. I did notice your favorites baits are a variation of white, which by is mine also. Why Pike being a predator attack a lot of there prey from below and what color is a Suckers belly or a Whitefish yes that would be White. They also eat Perch & Walleye's hence Firetiger Perch pattern and In brown stained water Walleye's belly's look yellow.
My Top 5
1. Mepp's. #5. single blade/ dressed. Colors I like White Red/White, Firetiger/Firetiger, Silver/White, My largest Pike 47 inch
2. Mepp's # 5 Dual Blades in above colors and I am the one who requested this as they did not make them at the time, they do now and I have the first ones made by them.
3. Rapala large size originals F18, on the Silver & Black paint some Red Gills
4. Spinner Bait 1/2 oz tipped with Minnow or Gulp Minnow or twister tail above Colors.
5. Spoons Daredevil Red/White with rear hook changed out to a Dressed single hook very weed less, Five of Diamonds, and Esox Red Eye also.
I also wondered if you had tried a bullet slip sinker ahead of the leader on your Swimbait ? I have painted bullet sinkers 1/8oz red and white and put ahead of my leader and it looks like the bait is chasing it. It also improves casting distance. I typically use Berkley 9 inch leaders 30lbs and fish with 17 lbs Berkley XL line and can't say it ever cost me a fish. I am thinking of trying Braid for additional casting distance, but I really can't complain about mono as the stretch can help when the fish surges at the boat.
Why I like Mepp's #5 the speed and sound are just right as they just seem to hone in on them when there lazy and crush them when there active. I have lost count of how many 40 plus inch Pike they have caught and I don't even get to excited till I see a 45 inch pike. I am still looking for a 50 inch Pike. Good Video and I will have to try some Swimbaits my self.

Great Vid. As hard as I am sure it was, it's great to see you mention the use of suckers. Live bait certainly has its place.

Where we are on the south end of Simcoe we like to load the boat up and get as many lines out as legal for last light trolling. Choice of lures changes incredibly where spoons really seem to shine.

Awesome suggestions! Heading out tomorrow, so I just swapped some of my baits out and threw in a pack of swim baits and twister tails. We are just starting to see the ice go out in some areas. Figure I gotta go a little more finesse.

depends where you're fishing but on a certain large bay in S Ontario:

1. Spoon (of a particular variety)
2. Swimbait
3. Jerkbait
4. Spinner (early June)
5. [everything else is just a toy]
