Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy - Book Chat

Resurrection was Leo Tolstoy's last novel and was published in 1899 in Russia and in 1900 in English. The novel tells the story of an aristocratic young man leading a life of privilege and idleness who unexpectedly meets a young woman from his past being tried for murder leading him to a change in consciousness and a journey of redemption. The novel explores ideas such as privilege, social justice and economic justice.
Note: This Xist Publishing edition has Resurrection misspelled on the cover. It's basically a reprinting of the original 1900 edition which is out of copyright, but if I had noticed the misspelling beforehand I would not have used this particular edition.

Not well known is Tolstoy's deep commitment to the reform proposals contained in the writings of the American political economist Henry George. The two never met but corresponded, and George's son visited Tolstoy early in the 20th century. As director of the online education and research project, the School of Cooperative Individualism, I have compiled many of Tolstoy's writings on his philosophy of social improvement. Here is a link to the author's page that contains Tolstoy's writings:

It's interesting that as a man you talk about this book as being about him, whereas it's really about how the course of women's lives was completely dominated by their biology.
If rich and well connected, they're married of to good families to preserve the family lineage and wealth.

If poor and working class a woman's best chance is marriage, leading to pregnancy after pregnancy but in the main character's case here, as a working class orphan, being seen as sexually desirable from a very young age means that she is continual prey to the men around her, constantly sexually molested by employers, employer's male relatives and fellow employees in service.
How ultimately she ends up pregnant and thrown out to fend for herself, how the only employment that is open to her from then on is prostitution.
How once thrown in to the gutter of society there's no way back.
That was the reality of many women's lives then, and in some parts of society, parts of the world, still is even now.
It's bleak.
