Had some people asking about the VM, so I resurrected this old clip I had put together. Sorry about the poor sound quality & static--the HD cam I used has a TERRIBLE mic.

Play it cuz you love it!!

Love the crunch of the Vintagde Modern. With a boost pedal it is an outstanding 80's metal amp! Good Job!!

I got rid of the Vintage Modern. I set the master volume at 8 when playing live, and it still sounded harsh. Even people in the audience told me it sounded harsh. I now own an Orange AD30HTC and Orange 2x12 cab. It sounds great, even at very low levels.

Agree--you can get two "identical" amps and they're not going to sound identical by any stretch of the imagination. Differences in OT, PT, and valves are all going to influence the tone. Guess I just got lucky and found a good one, and got the cabs while they were still purple. Cheers!

Hey race! Greets from the far end of the interwebs! Can't believe I stumbled onto this...I've got a couple clips of my VM up too lol. I really need to redo mine now that I understand the amp better now.

Yeah, I'm very familiar with Splawn. I've never owned one, but I've played a Quick Rod several times. They are fantastic amps. To me they sound more like a Marshall than most modern Marshalls.

Agree--big fan of attenuators for smaller venues, although my choice has always been the ROCKMAN Power Soak. Also, I've heard both the 100-watt VM and the 50-watt and I definitely prefer the 50-watt. YMMV. Cheers!

I don't find that it needs to be super-loud to sound good, but I think there IS something to be said for pushing the full stack and having the matched cabinets. Obviously these were voiced to be paired. Also, this was done when I was still deciding what was a good video camera to use (this one WASN'T one). Also remember this LP has P-90's in it--going to sound MUCH fatter with humbuckers.Cheers!

@DillonBerkley Sorry for the delay--yes, the head has stock power tubes, but the preamp tubes have been upgraded to Mullard reissues. The Marshall 425A/B cabinets have Celestion G12C 25-watt Greenbacks that AFAIK are only available in the Vintage Modern and Jimi Hendrix reissue cabinets. Play it cuz you love it!! --Race

While I love the VM, I've recently become a featured artist in the Splawn camp, with the Quick Rod being my go-to amp. I also have a Nitro for the more modern sounds, but the Splawn amps just kill. Check 'em out.

I had a JCM 800 znd didnt like it because it didnt hv enough distortion. Used with a pedal gets muddy. I now have a JVM 210H, but it looks muddy amd lacks brightness and trebs. Is the VM superior, or I could change tubes in the JVM like KT66s ? Please, help. I am slso ghinking of the Mesa M5

Do you have stock tubes in the power section and what kind of speakers are in the cabinet?

I have a JVM 210H but looks inferior to the VM lacking trebs, brightness and definition. Do u think changing tubes will help? Or better trade the amp. JVM looks muddy

@dekzan I had a Vintage Modern for a while. The higher gain stage is very tinny and harsh without the mid boost. With the mid boost in, it gets fairly muddy. It's extremely hard, if not impossible, to get a tight bottom end out of the VM. The Low Dymanic Range is great for Classic Rock and Blues, but don't expect to get any kind of modern higher gain tone from the amp at all.
