Two years ago I was a waiter, no idea how to make a website, no past programming experiece or design of any sort (Don't even have a college degree).
I started taking courses on udemy and by chance stumbled upon FLUX channel (and also THE FUTUR) which made me discover webflow. After months I got convinced, and took his course as well along all the others I was already taking, and I gotta say, more that the course itself (which is really good), what I value the most was the community I found after signing up, which helped me tremendously. Now, I just completed a project thanks to a lead I found inside the community and also landed a job on upwork which pays me 24 dollars per hour (I'm from Italy, that kind of money for me is already good) which I started like a month ago.

So yeah, I was always reading stories about other people, on how they managed to transition from a profession to another all by themselves, and it felt really difficult, if not impossible at times, but I'm here goddamnit, the living proof that you just have to be relentless and sooner or later something is gonna click, something is going to turn in your favor.

Go on upwork, go on fiver, go everywhere, be everywhere

peace!

I'm a video editor living in a third-world country, Argentina, (So I belong to the market that everyone blames for when they say it's impossible to make good money online) and I started on Upwork on July 2021 at $7, 50/h with a very minimal portfolio, and today, after only 6 months my rate is $20/h. I know it's still not enough for first-world countries but my goal is to be at $50/h at the end of the year and most likely it will happen, so I don't think it has to take 5+years to make good money. Besides, dealing with the clients in Upwork will make you VERY resilient and valuable for good clients that don't care about money and only care about end result.

I’ve had pretty good successes on UpWork. I have made enough to call it a full time job. However, it has taken me years to get there and it’s constant adjustments to my profile and how I put in proposals.

It's often useful to know how both the buyer and the seller's end of a platform work.

As a starter I did exactly what you said in the last part of the video, networking. The problem I'm facing is the money I get, 300-400 bucks is a lot for a website over here, 2k for a website is max and that's the ecom websites, the big boys. So I want clients from the internet since I have more potential there to earn more money + I already have a good portfolio to show!

This is valuable information for someone like me just starting out.
I'm almost finished with your Wed Design course and bought the Wedflow Masterclass during the Black Friday sale. I'm absolutely loving the Web Design course. There's so much great information and resources. I knew I'd like the course and all and thought it would be ok, but I've really been enjoying it. I genuinely look forward to learning and doing the homework.

I used upwork(elance what upwork bought).
When started my company was sometimes short on money. Then I was working on elance... to me it's all about selling yourself. Have a good niech (I'm Dutch and specified in logistics so carrier integration) it was quiet easy getting jobs. For sure it was quiet easy to get work (Dutch and Belgium customers) and ofcourse do your job well and pick what can lead to more work. Had a customer who was very happy and at the end did like 20 jobs for him (smaller and bigger once). Most of my customers come back and I think if your customer wants cheapest don't think that are not the customers you want to pursue.

Now use the platform for little projects but now I hire instead and rather find people to build up a relationship with so they know your code and how you work

I'm a highschool student taking dual enrollment classes and I was given the opportunity to take a Google UX Design course to start building my portfolio.
It's early and I'm very confused but this path excites me since I can be creative and work with technology. Everyone's comments are very inspiring to me.

you also learn how to talk and organize your work with your clients, also solve problems.. it's a great learning platforms how to communicate with your "real world" potential clients in the future - i think this is a high value. no matter what money you will make. Surely very competitive people (india bangladesh) who will do some amasing work for almost free. Crazy world.

I've been trying to build editorial illustration freelance through cold emailing, contests, open calls, etc... I will keep pursuing it, but I feel like upwork and fiverr are a way to make a buck while still pursuing the bigger fish. But I haven't tried yet. Thanks for the breakdown - I thought both platforms were pretty much the same. I don't think I like that bidding aspect on Upwork....

Yeah, great informative video. For my past 6+ years experience. I love to work better get hired in a real company (fulltime, remote or be in a office) but working like this gives me more skills and knowledge by working with many different taleneted people. Freelancing is just feels like a side projects but doesn't gives me so much freedom as I am working in a company. When I started freelancing everything was so slow and hard to learn because I was the only 1 person in my team (I mean everything was made by myself). Right now I had a lot of different knowledge such as Agile, working with teams, giving design to developers, having different calls, meetings, design testing with users. I mean its way more fun to be in a Team rather than feeling alone. Thanks for the info!

Hi everyone. When we receive an order for UX/UI design from Upworkt, do we need to conduct an interview with the customer? Or can I receive an order simply by writing?

As a UI/UX designer, is it possible to get a job on Upwork just by writing without interviewing the customer?
