OUTLANDER REAL HISTORY: WAS CHARLES EDWARD STUART WORTHY OF FOLK HERO STATUS?

CORRECTION: As stated later in the video, Charles Edward Stuart was born on 31st December 1720, not 1729. Apologies!

Thanks so much for checking out this video on Charles Edward Stuart aka Bonnie Prince Charlie. He has traditionally been portrayed as a folk hero (think of the Skye Boat Song, which is in the video). The series OUTLANDER makes him out to be pompous and foolish. Check out the facts and see what you think.

This video is part of an upcoming course called ENGLISH HISTORY: FROM STONEHENGE TO THE COLD WAR which is a box set course giving an in depth overview of English history. Subscribe on YouTube for updates.

I had no idea that the theme song to Outlander was actually a song about Bonnie Prince Charlie and they just changed the lyrics. It has such a lovely memory.

I felt bad for the Jacobites, for the Stuart really did have the direct line to the throne, they were robbed because they were Catholic. Very good channel. You did your research, you should have more subscribers because of your professionalism.

I did not know this was the Outlander theme. They rewrote the lyrics. That’s very cool.

A reward of £30000 would be about £3, 500, 000 in today's money. It is possible to convert from Livres Tournois, Louis d'Or to Pounds Sterling of 1745 and make an estimate in modern currency, even though it would provide only an estimated figure. The costs of manufacturing and the simple notion of "cost of living" in the mid-18th century would be radically different from what they are today as most common people struggled to even survive. Still, getting the reward of £30000 would have been like winning at the National Lottery. Yet, as History shows, there was no lucky winner on this particular occasion.

Whatever else Bonnie Prince Charlie was or was not . . . he was definitely not a military commander. Should have listened to Lord Murray at Culloden. Run away little Charlie . . . back to the French.

Charles Edward Stuart was an ambitious fool. He spoke little English, no Gaelic, and was himself half Polish. Initially he relied on Lord George Murray as his military advisor, which resulted in success. He later came increasingly dependent on the advice of his Quartermaster General, John O Sullivan, whos chose the ground on which the Jacobite ar.my was annihilated
