Outlander's Historical Accuracy Reviewed

The Netflix series “Outlander” takes place in the 1700s and deals with the events of an out-of-time nurse from the 20th century who finds herself caught in the drama and intrigue of the conflict between Scotland and England. It’s filled with drama, seduction, action, and betrayal, all set against the backdrop of real-world events.

But like all television, the creators of the show take liberties here and there. Not just for the sake of the storytelling, but also because it can be more expedient and less budget-busting. Despite some of the rule-bending, the showrunners of “Outlander” and the original author of the books have taken great care to make sure the show is true to the time period. This is “Outlander’s” historical accuracy reviewed.

Leaving accuracy aside, you would think the person making this video would pronounce the name Culloden correctly! It is a present-day village in Scotland after all.

Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite had very little support in the Presbyterian more democratically inclined Lowlands, where over half of Scots lived. Not even all of the Clans supported him.

He sounds so surprised that so many items in the show are actual facts. In interviews both writer as the producers of the show do their outmost best to get as close to real live, as possible. Sometimes it’s not possible but at some point they will tell

While the last person tried as a witch in Scotland was around 1728, the last Scot tried as a witch was in 1944 in London. Just an interesting fact.

Ok, enough. If you think as an American you can comment on the accuracy Outlander's Scottish history - make sure you are having the decency to pronounce both Culloden and Scots Gaelic "Gallic" properly!

You would know how to pronounce Culloden, if you watched the show. And, who ok'd your pronunciation? The should be fired.

What is it about Americans that they are so desperate to hear the sound of their own voices they don't bother listening to anyone else ? They live in a country where facts are easier to check than anywhere in the world ( unlike when Diana Gabledon researched the early books) yet they still mispronounce words and phrases. Culloden has been mentioned but Dunbonnet refers to a bonnet ( hat or headgear) that is Dun in colour (Dun is the adjective) so Dun should be emphasised rather than bonnet. The language spoken in HIGHLAND Scotland was Gaelic ( pronounce GALLIC) it is only similar to Gaelic (Gaylic) the Irish that speak and pupils learn it at school hence Caitriona's knowledge. Lowland Scots spoke Scots English and many regarded Gaelic as a barbaric language. I suggest we ignore this guy.

More or less correct {except for that annoying pronunciation of Culloden), but so many inaccuracies not mentioned.As someone specialising in the study of Scottish history in the 18th century, I found the series (and books) full of annoying inaccuracies that, unfortunately, many fans have taken as truth. Okay, some details in the portrayal of the Highlands around 1745 are minor: the Catholic priest with a church, (a proscribed religion with priests in hiding), ; town with the two story houses and a marketplace; the horses rather than small Highland ponies (horses couldn't survive the harsh conditions and there was no fodder to feed them); roads and carts {carts were unknown outside of Inverness because of the lack of roads); the haymaking {hay wouldn't grow so far north). Goodness, I could go on.

Then there are the larger inaccuracies. Claire and Jamie's Catholic wedding wasn't actually legal and, therefore, no protection for her (the Catholic religion was proscribed at the time and the Fraser clan wasn't Catholic anyway). The Watch was already a highly respected army regiment and not a bunch of protectionist thugs. Above all, there was no occupying 'English' army in Scotland operating out of large forts. The army in Scotland was British, mostly made up of Scots and seriously understaffed. It had three small forts (William, Augustus and Old Fort George) and a couple of barracks (Bernera and Ruthven) in the Highlands. Nor could someone be flogged near to death with impunity. Captain Randall could never have behaved as he did without incurring punishment, probably severe.
