For those who said pictures first, having an overall view, something that helped them create a ‘picture’ of the topic really made a difference. They accomplished this by looking at the pictures, graphs, maps, reading the summary so they had a notion of the ‘whole’.

That led us to then ask how they went about learning in their college program. For those who said words first, it became very clear that they needed to preview the text material before class if they were going to get anything out of class – having an idea of the terms and concepts and writing them down ahead of class made a huge difference in their perception of in-class learning.

Thanks for your questions/comments.

The Vr – visual reading was included to distinguish between a preference for words or pictures. When students were asked to complete the sentence, “When I really want to learn something new, I…”, responses ranged from “talk to someone, ” to “just ‘muck’ around with it till I figure it out, ” to “research it.”

We use all the learning styles - there is no good, bad, better or worse - only different. The magic is in knowing the order that works best for you. For some types of learning you may have a strong and obvious preference and knowing that can really help you get started when facing a new challenge.

For your other comment, my experience has been that where there is a disability, the other sensory modalities accommodate and compensate.

When asked how they researched, most said online and when questioned about what drew them to a site or what they looked at first – words or pictures, they usually knew right away and didn’t have to think about it.

Hi glmicame, there is an option at the bottom of the video labeled as "cc"....if you click this, you will get the English subtitles. Thanks for watching...

I've heard of the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners, but where does this "visual reader" concept come from? What's the research? I see that this video comes from a college so I'm assuming that it is backed by reliable research. I've always thought that reading was a very auditory task. I'm thinking about how the rate for illiteracy is far, far greater for folks who are deaf than for folks who are blind.

Funny video, but believe it or not really informed me on what techniques to use to learn. Great

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE USING THIS VIDEO FOR MY CLASSES...I AM FROM COLOMBIA AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY TO GET THIS VIDEO WITH SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH. MY LEARNERS LOVE THIS STORY VERY MUCH, BUT THEY ARE FROM 1ST SEMESTER IN A BA, SO THEIR ENGLISH IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE MESSAGE...CONGRATULATIONS!!!
