Why did Princess Anne refuse to shake hands with fans? Princess Anne, the only daughter of Elizabeth II, prefers to avoid any physical contact while interacting with the public. And it's not snobbery at all. In the HBO documentary "Queen of the World", Anne explained that she avoids shaking hands with fans during traditional "walkabouts" (free interaction between members of the royal family with crowds of people, not stipulated by protocol) because she adheres to old traditions: "We've never shaken hands. And in theory, if you can't shake hands with everyone, then don't even start doing it."

Princess Anne is correct and an old fashioned girl at heart. And follows traditional royal protocol. Like she says, if she can’t shake hands with everyone, then don’t shake hands with anyone at all. That is correct and proper of her. It doesn’t make her a snob, it’s a well valued point of view on Princess Anne’s part. She is a warm lovely lady, who really does resemble her late mother Queen Elizabeth in looks and the way she speaks. Her voice is so much like that of her late mother. 👑❤️👸🏻❤️

I got to have lunch with Princess Anne ahead of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo last year. Given that it wasn’t an informal walkabout, she shook my hand. As an American who loves the Royal Family, it was great getting to speak with her. Such a classy and polite lady!

I think it would be a good idea to always wear gloves when you're greeting the crowds. You know where their hands have been? LOL right! A lot of people don't even wash their hands after they wipe their butt. This is the number one way to spread infection

No thank you, I do not want to shake hands. I am a mere mortal who worked in healthcare and was meeting visitors and vendors all the time. The etiquette rule is not to shake a lady’s hand unless she extends her hand first. The majority of people were ignorant of this and I was forced to shake hands as a matter of business. Ugh! I always washed my hands at the first opportunity following.

I recall an early video of her maybe in her 20s where she talked about not shaking hands, and I wrongly thought she was being snobbish. But as I’m now 63, I think about colds and viruses and also like this short says if you can’t shake hands with one, don’t shake hands with any.

Princess Anne, who should be the Queen now. She’s so wise like her dear mother & works so incredibly hard. She earns every penny of her royal wages. I have so much respect for this tiny lady ( I saw her once in Australia & I couldn’t believe how tiny she was) but she packs a punch when she needs to. Everyone respects the Princess Royal, Princess Anne. Even when her first marriage broke down there wasn’t any scandal surrounding her.
She just quietly got on with it then quietly married her soul mate & love of her life who has stood by her for many years.

But one could say if you can’t talk to everyone why start doing it? I think it probably has more to do with her attempted kidnapping and I don’t blame her for that. I probably wouldn’t even approach a crowd, she should leave it as it wasn’t done in the past and that’s that.
