Both seem applicable. Having to do things just "because it is tradition" is annoying. If being hard on ppl builds character, why do most ppl talk shit behind each others back and spread rumors?

TBH there are a couple of things, one tradition of "earning your bones" and taking responsibility in the small things before being given responsibility in the big things. The other, at least in my service, it is less "rudeness" than we don't want to invest time, energy, and personal lives with people that can't stick out the insanity for a year or more.

47 year old rookie here. I get it. I've been a firefighter and police officer so I expected it.

May be multiple things and insecurities if you can avoid someone from making mistakes the hard way as you may experience should be the way anyone should go. Teach them help them.

Looking for feelings of Give me a break and get a clue.

We are hard on them because of many of their attitudes. I graduated- that’s all you need to know, it seems to be. Experiencing eye rolls, texting their buddies making fun of your advice, and even watching your words or advice literally go in one ear and out the other does not engender any respect. Another thing is- this generation wants to be cuddled, coddled, sweet talked, and excused. That’s not going to happen. Although most calls are not emergencies in the strictest sense- this is a serious life or death job. Some of you think it’s a joke. Get serious and toughen up. You’ll be the better in the streets for it.

I can't put my finger on it. I just upgraded to paramedic and I am really worried about how much crap I am going to get from guys who have been medics for years.
