I wish my parents had talked about weight more when I was young. Not as extreme to fat shame, but to educate on healthy attitudes to food rather than using it as comfort so that I wouldn’t have been overweight growing up. The silence surrounding fatness hurt more because I was fat so I was always ashamed about it

I think people forget that this white culture is pretty new. My dad hit me. My family called me fat. The widespread acceptance on all these issues is still a very new thing. Most of our parent hit us and yelled at us. My family made fun of my passions and wanted me to go into a profession that would make a lot of money.
I think part of the difference is that, once you get to a certain age and height in the west, your parents feel like they've lost their hold on you. Hitting becomes more of a grey zone because the kid might return the favor.

It’s even funnier because they’re always like “you have to finish everything on your plate always” “have rice with every meal” “we gotta eat now” “why are you getting big”

as a chubby asian, I can confirm this is real. Even your relatives you haven't seen for ages will say this

As a kid with two white parents, in my experience, we do talk about it constructively a lot but don't shame it.
My mom will tell me it sounds like I'm breathing harder and then we discuss it and what we can do differently. I.e. exercise more, add more vegetables. She had bulimia as a teen so she is very sensitive to the topic.

I have been fat pretty much my whole life and my mom hasn't been very kind about it. She would constantly comment on how bad I looked, make me weigh myself in front of her, and criticize me when the numbers went up. In my senior year of highschool, she wouldn't let me get my picture taken because she said I didn't lose enough weight for the pictures to be worth the money. When I told her that what she was doing was hurting me, she said that she had been trying to make me feel bad about myself on purpose because to her the fact that I was still fat meant that it didn't hurt enough to motivate me to lose weight. My family tells me I should just become a priest because there's no way I will ever be in a relationship. And yet, I still love my mom and my family. I think that is something many of us can relate to. Still loving our parents even though they hurt us sometimes. Sometimes it feels like the only love in your life is the love you give out to other people, but just know that somewhere out there, there is someone who cares, who will listen, and wishes you all the happiness in the world. Just keep working on yourself, try to improve your physical and mental health, and make sure you always put out kindness into the world and one day, someone will give that kindness back to you. ❤️

xD I mean, I get it, and it’s funny, Asian countries ARE way stricter about this than white countries generally but also... I’ve heard a lot of white parents still fat shaming their kids, even when they’re not like, _actually_ fat? Not even just like, Americans either. Brits, Aussies, lotta people still do that shit, lol.

Asian parents: Fat shaming their kids at the worst moment possible
Also Asian parents: Making their kids eat gallons of foods three times a day and get upset and angry if they don't

I literally choked on air with Mulan cover. If my parents start to sing this, I'm sure I'll forget everything and laugh myself to death right there.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is so true, every time I eat my father always tells me that I will regret eating when I grow older, he even said that I would be jealous to my other classmates when I grow up
