One option would be to setup a trade organization for artists who wanted to certify that their album is not pitch-corrected. Outside of music, there is a program in place for folks who want to buy sustainable wood/paper products. An organization called FSC has standards for sustainable forestry management. Any vendor using the FSC logo has to meet the FSC standards. So if someone wanted to do something like this for music: Pick a term that would be applicable to the music we are talking about (Unfiltered? Unprocessed?). With a trade org/trademark program, you could let folks certify that they are not using corrected drums, etc and then use that label if the music has not been digitally processed.

“Unknowingly sold pitch corrected vocals”…I’m in!

I couldn’t agree more Fil & have signed your petition. I’ve spent my entire life studying & practicing music & seeing so much audio manipulation in commercially released music makes you begin to question the point at times. It also gives young singers, and musicians in general, a false expectation of what intonation & good musicality is. Good luck with the petition I hope it gains the support it deserves. x

Hi Fil,
Great idea to get this petition started! I already signed it, and think consumers should be aware of what they are buying. Thanks for doing this and bringing this issue to light! Debbie☮️

This is such a great idea! I'll definitely sign and tell my followers on Gab. Its not just buying a 'pitch, ' corrected album unknowingly but wasting money on a concert that is terrible because the performer cant perform as they were advertised.

FIL, In my hometown, there is a large television news station that has a segment called WWBT 12 on your side. The station promotes anything that people want more attention paid to. It is broadcast to all of central and northern Virginia. How would you feel about me contacting them to broadcast your petition ?

Having been working as a producer and sound engineer in the analogue era back in the late 80s to mid 90s, I didn’t get the chance to experience auto tuning and pitch correction until a few years ago.
Back in the analogue days, there weren’t a lot of options if a singer sang out of tune or did a bump note, we just have to keep on doing takes until he or she can get it right. There are ways to cheat like punching in and editing in the right note, sometimes even by physically razoring out the wrong bits and inserting the right bits of tape in using sticky tapes! Back then, musicians did spend a lot of time in the studio, it wasn’t uncommon for singers to spend a whole week there just to perfect the vocals of 1 song.
There weren’t many singers who could complete a song in 1 take without punching in. So fast forwarding to the 2020s, music technology has advanced so much that we don’t need multi million dollars equipment anymore, in fact I can easily get much better quality recording using very cheap gear with my iPhone than an analogue 24 track with an SSL desk from the 90s. It’s very easy to get perfect sounding vocals even from bad singers, with auto tuning and pitch correction. If I am asked now whether it is a good thing or not, I’d say I don’t know, it really depends, even many classical records weren’t recorded in 1 take, a lot of the time they were spiced together in parts, so would that be considered cheating? I really don’t know. But personally, I’d rather not use auto tuning on vocals if I could help it. My 2 cents! 😘

What a great idea! There's really no downside to this, as you said. If a code (let's say PC for pitch-corrected) is on it then people who are okay with it will buy it, and people who are not okay with it can avoid it or at the very least they know what they're buying. Just like on a food package where it says non-GMO or Vegan, etc. Of course, personally what I'd love to eventually happen is that artists would want to avoid having the PC label on the product so they wouldn't use it. Just a dream.

Fil, as a vocalist, I would want to have it known that my work was NOT pitch-corrected! I will sign, for sure; hope I can figure out how to access the petition, lol. I am tech challenged at times. Love your channel!

Good on you, Phil. Take action. I've signed the petition.

I completely agree. Full disclosure for consumers.

It’s good to see so much support. I just want to say though - I worked on a project once where the producer and the artist specified they didn’t want to use any pitch correction but the engineer put “just a little” auto tune on the vocals without telling anyone. I only found out because on a remix I saw his plugins and saw it flashing away in the background.

I agree that you should know if people are duping the public, same with 'live' shows when they are not singing live, or are miming. It should not be allowed as it is misrepresenting their product so to speak!

Fil, I'm totally behind you on this. Signed and contributed. Fortunately (or unfortunately of late?), I listened to music from the A.M. stations and attended concerts from the early 60's forward. I can hear the real deal. Perhaps that's why I stopped listening to "radio" and for most genre's, didn't like concerts either, beginning around 2001? My favorite yrs were mid '60s - late '70's. That was, for me, the Golden Era (90's for Country being an exception.) In fairness, I admit we had a local "underground" F.M. station (college based WFDD, which played classical until 11pm) that played albums beginning to end (no commercials) from 11pm-5am - so I was "served and taped 6 hours of the best" before any outside exposure. Greatest thing ever!

Signed, shared, and sincere in wanting to expose the fakes and know what I'm listening to. In what other profession can someone fake it, be paid for it, and be admired for a talent you don't possess.
