The reason why I looked this up is because I read that the axis angle representation of rotations can easily encode the number of times we rotate around to get to end rotation, which in tern means we can encode the Rotation rate easily. For example, we can say we rotate around 360 degress (in t = 1s) or we can rotate around 2x that (720 degress in t = 1s), and this means we can rotate to the end rotation in t = 1/2s in later case. So some animation data is more easily stored in this format than it is to change interpolation speed using quaternions.
