The Fujifilm 16mm F1.4 has been a staple with landscape photographers for quite some time. Now Fujifilm have decided to make it harder by adding in the Fujifilm 16mm F2.8 WR into the mix. Let's see which one comes out on top.

Which lens would you choose out of the two and why?

I have both lenses, use the f/2.8 model about 80% of the time that I use this focal length. Size and weight factor in because my EDC camera is an X-E class, so the smaller Fujicrons (in which I include the 16mm f/2.8) works best.

When I do use the f/1.4, it will be mounted on my X-T3 and I will know what I'm shooting before I start, to justify the weight and size. The DOF scale and clutch manual focus allow for terrific zone and hyper focus settings that simplify landscape and cityscapes and I use this method often.

16 1.4 is my favorite lens. Sharp, fast, bright and built like a tank but relatively small. I bought the lens long before the f2. 8 came out and to be honest, didn't see the reason to get the f2. 8 at that time. I shoot mostly in super low light condition anyway and nothing beats the 1.4 for me (except for the f1. 2 and 1.0 but those lenses couldn't give me such a wide angle that I wanted).

Of course the 16 1.4. Its the king of Fujifilm. Versatile phenomenal lens. Street, indoor, night, pseudomacro, astropotography, portrait. I took it as the only lens on many trips. Permanently attached to one of my XT2s

the 16mm 1.4 @ 2.8 is less bright than the 16mm 2.8 @ 2.8, very interesting, if the photo was taken without being recovered in post-production

I've noticed this in other reviews: images from the 2.8 seem overexposed. The 1.4 definitely does a better job preserving highlights.

I am thinking of purchasing the 2.8 as the 1.4 is too big and too expensive for me. However, I have heard that the 2.8 is a bit soft on the edges. I am primarily looking for a general walkaround lens for landscape, family and wide angle portraiture.

The 16mm f2.8 is very appealing to me since it is so handy great for travel for a small person like me 😁 and besides it is better use for video, just mount it on a gimbal. And lastly I can't afford the 1.4 and the size is an issue for me 😁
(I am not crazy about bokeh anyway)

AF performance difference between the two in video mode?

one suggestion for "shootouts" would be: the 60 mm vs 60 mm macro lens; 50 f 2.0 vs 56
f 1.2 (both versions) ; 80 mm macro vs 90 mm f 2 and all of them together collectively, as they are all of 35 mm equivalent focal lengths in the portrait range ( ie: 75 mm --> 135 mm inclusive) and since there are this many choices around, a guide to which one for what use would be a help to us all, especially those enthusiasts with a set budget or bokeh / low light performance ideals in mind, as we all eventually look seriously at the mirror less options and how each compares with our old and good Nikon OR Cannon favourite D.S.L.R. lenses.

Great review! However as someone thinking about entering the fuji ecosystem, one argument straight up knocks the 16mm F1.4 out : price. It is more than twice the price of the 16mm F2.8!

I like that handheld camera mount or holder while filming video. Kindly let me know what is it? Name of that holder.

Best thing ever about this video is the list of 'contents' and where to find it, so i was able to slide around to the relevant bits. Good review, too.

I love the idea of a wide f 1.4 because I often find myself taking photos in Lower Light conditions inside. And I love wide angle lenses. I'm not sure, if the x16 2.4 will not be so great and low light conditions and to make it even harder I really like the 10-24 F4 which seems little bit more modern to me. What to do?
