In the Conservatives' first policy announcement of the general election campaign, Rishi Sunak said on Saturday he would introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for 18-year-olds if his party wins the vote in July.

Under the proposed policy, the Tories say 18-year-olds would be given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.

So they can find £2.5 billion for national service to give young people 'opportunities' but couldn't find £2.5billion for crumbling schools or sure start centres 🤔

I joined the army at 16 years old, I served 16 years and completed 3 tours of Afghanistan as an infantryman.

Although it made me the man I am today, it has also ruined my life, I am riddled with ptsd and depression, and the army do absolutely nothing to help.

I am 100% against this.

Notice how everyone who is in favour of this wouldn't do it themselves and look like they would have trouble going up a flight of stairs?

Volunteering by definition is not compulsory, compulsory volunteering is community service.

So older people who wont be affected will be able to vote on sending young people potentially to their deaths.

if the guy with the umbrella thinks it's a good idea why didn't he choose to do it during his younger years to join the army then or a service and if he thinks it's a good idea why not fight and get some hands on experience in Ukraine and have fun with that

Does anybody seriously think the Tories would be able to organize this when they have failed in basically every large-scale infrastructure project they've tried? This would be magnitudes more difficult than HS2, their free childcare policy, Rwanda, etc. And they've made a mess of all of those. They will never be able to orchestrate this in a million years.

Send the guy with the umbrella to the front line in the Ukraine or to the Sudan, he's not too old to do something useful. Let's see how he feel about it then.

They should have a referendum on it.
And those who vote for it get called up first.

Funny how it's always people who would be exempt from it that think it's as good idea.

They should ask if it's a good idea and if the advert is yes tell them there's no upper age limit

If the tories had their way theyd have people compulsory volunteering for every service. A society of plebs giving free labour to their taskmasters, feeling grateful for the few fortunate breadcrumbs that may happen to be spilled at our feet

If they have £2.5 billion, why not use that money to help young people and improve the country's infrastructure, such as by building affordable housing?

If they suddenly found 2.5bn behind the sofa and they want to help young people, just put it into the education system.

I thought the "conservatives" were meant to be all about 'freedom'. Instead it's mandatory for thee but not for we like usual
