9 years later and I just bought the Merlin Steadicam. I had my own diy type merlin back in the day. Today I shoot with a gimbal like everyone else and for kicks I bought the Merlin to test and compare vs my gimbal.

The pole that holds it is a basic light stand with a Stabilizer adapter. You can buy this mount for the Steadicam Merlin separately.

I have the good old Steadicam JRE you also showed in the past but to get it balanced well takes sometime. Even more important is to learn how to fly this thing. Takes some Thanks for this video.

The easy way is to use a wide lens and close down the aperture so that everything remains in focus. Don't use a shallow depth of field.

The Sigma has a wider aperture, the Tokina has different focal lengths. Both are very sharp, but the Sigma also works on Full Frame.

Yes the lens works great in low light.

@Rockadell The HD4000 is too big for the camera itself. It should only be used for heavy setups like camera + lens + light + microphone, etc. Instead you should be looking at the HD1000 or HD2000.

You would not change focus with this type of setup, unless you had a wireless follow focus system. Any little touch will move the camera.

That outfit would make any Marine proud.
I'm working on a DIY stabilizer my self & then maybe moving up to a Merlin if I can afford it.

The 18-135mm may not work well on a stabilizer, you won't be able to zoom or focus. This Merlin would support that setup, or you could do the Glidecam HD2000.

You could probably modify your own docking bracket for a Glidecam with a threaded rod. Go to my blog and search for "Steadicam Merlin Vest to Glidecam HD4000 DIY Adapter"

Hey, Im using the Canon XA-10 without the mic attachment on the Steadicam Merlin 2 . It has a problem boating and it sort of leans to the left but only slightly. I have altered the fore and aft trim roller (along with EVERYTHING else) but it still does it. What am I doing wrong? (Because I'm assuming the product is in correct conditioning, its simply user malfunction)

Hey Emm, I have the JR you also had in the past but do you keep focus when walking around with the Steadicam with a DSLR?

I have not used the C5 yet, but it is much bigger than the Merlin. Price on the Merlin is more expensive. I think the old one is discontinued and the I have to try the new Version 2 Merlin.

@guymhahn Set the lens so that everything is in focus. Change aperture to something like F/5.6-F/8

Thanks mate, Merlin looks more practicable with the size but pretty hard to justify the price unfortunately

would it work with a 200 mm 2.8 and keep the image steady in low light?
