I think part of the negative reactions from tumblr come from the fact that its very reminiscent of that classic bullying tactic of pretending to be someones friend to get information to bully them with. many tumblr users especially at the time probably had experiences with this type of bullying and so seeing someone that they look up to do the same thing was likely very upsetting!

I have a degree in cultural anthropology so I feel qualified to tell y'all that the nonsense he was spouting has absolutely nothing to do with anthropology. 99% of the job is listening to other people talk about their lives. As a side note it's also one of the few female-dominated fields, and this kind of pretentious softboi nonsense would have been eye-rolled and ignored in every class I ever took.
