That's the same kind of thinking as finance bros who think economies can grow infinitely and plan economies around it

I feel like the "death gives life meaning" line is copium. Is it true that life would have no meaning without death? We probably wouldn't have defined it if it didn't exist. But we probably would have identified the difference between inert objects and sapient beings.

I don't really understand the problem here. You can accept the inevitability of death and still do everything in your power to avoid it for as long as possible. That's what I assume you're doing already.

The issue is that this is an oft-repeated argument for the value of death that, in reality, doesn’t hold up. Death does not instill life with value, nor would a life without death have no value. Death, at most, makes procreation practical for the species. But there’s no basis behind the idea that death is what makes any part of life meaningful.

Personally speaking, death terrifies me. Almost everybody I've ever talked to doesn't seem to be bothered by the idea of their own obliteration, but for me the idea of nonexistence, the inevitability that I will one day no longer be able to experience anything, good or bad, ever again, is frightening beyond measure.
I would love to continue to exist, to experience, to feel and think. For me, life is meaningful intrinsically, not because it eventually ends but because it is. Stories aren't meaningful to us because they have endings, they're meaningful because of their content and what we can learn from them. I view life in much the same way.
I want experiences. I want to absorb and think and ponder and question and create and learn and love for as long as I can.

I love my life because of my life, not because of the fact that my life will end one day. I don't think I'd love my loved ones any less or enjoy the things I enjoy any less if I was immortal and knew it.

Death gives life value because what is rare, is precious.
And what frightens me is that the rich, who covet all the wrong things and don't cherish what they should, will take all the joy out of their life in their attempt to cheat death, and we will be the ones pay for it with OUR lives.

I do think there’s a case to be made for artificial life extension with purpose. Like, if you’re just spinning wheels and saying “but who will do my work?” or you have some sort of nebulous fomo then no, that’s not a good reason, but if you are legitimately still excited about what you could be doing in the world then it’s not a bad thing to be able to keep going until you’re done.

The tricky bit if we get to that point technologically is then to help people come to a healthy appreciation of that finitude so that people don’t end up stagnating or being exploited for eternity. In fact, it can’t be allowed while the US exists in its current form because somebody will definitely implement a university library rule where you’re not allowed to die with debt

I mean, if people wanna live longer, why not?

Admittedly my brain is broken, but the fact that people fear death is so wild to me lol. Like thats so far outside of my perspective that I cant even empathize with that being an anxiety people face. Im running toward it headlong lmao. Looking forward to it.

Does your logic extend to other things? If we should let people die to remind ourselves how good is to be not dead, should we also willigly torture ourselves, say, weekly, for a reminder of how good is to be not tortured? Is artificial scarcity also good then?

Accepting death also means that we should not act to prevent it, and we obviously do. So you should explain what kind of death is acceptable and why or admit your hypocricy.

Life is the water. Death is the container that makes the water useable. Its the frame around the painting. If you knew you had forever to get something accomplished, nothing would ever get accomplished.

Our finitude is the end of interest and importance. We ought to fight it, defeat it, and reverse it as soon as we can.

I don't think he's talking about the death of individual people, but the death of the "living" systems of wealth generation.

That's cute and all, but I would rather live for as long as possible.

I'm confident that most people would agree.

Our inevitable death gives our lives savor. The best thing to do with your life is to live the best life that we can, not whine about our mortality. It's ultimately a waste of the time we have.

To me it is pretty obvious that he meant that some would die earlier than they otherwise would have.
EDIT: You know.. like war leads to death even though the casualties would have died anyway... some day.
