Joan Baez sings the English traditional ballad 'The Death Of Queen Jane' (Child #170) from her 1964 Vanguard album 'Joan/5'. This song is (possibly) about Jane Seymour, the third wife of King Henry VIII, who died from an infection twelve days after giving birth to a son (future King Edward VI) on October 12, 1537. The birth was natural but popular beliefs otherwise are expressed in this song. Henry, famous for mistreating wives, evidently did love Jane and mourned her death. Another version of the song was recorded by Peggy Seeger on the album 'A Song For You And Me'.

This album was given to me as a wedding present on September 11, 1965. I was sitting sewing a few minutes ago (4/15/22), and this song came into my mind, with all lyrics intact. I've not listened to it for at least 40 years, but there it was, intact on "the back roads of my mind." Lovely to listen to young Joan sing it again. I'm 76 now.

My mother sang songs of Joan to us as kids. This was one of my favorites.

Such a beautiful, poignant song. Even queens weren't immune to the mortal dangers of childbirth.
