We haven't had a non-Bowser main villain in a mainline Mario platformer since Super Mario Land 2. I think it's about time.

A new villain would be perfect, they're already trying to be as fresh as possible with this game, a new villain is the perfect way to seal it as that.

To be fair, this makes alot of sense. Bowser seems to be dimming down, as shown at the end of Super Mario 3D World: Bowsers Fury. I think he’s not going as hard on Mario as he used to, so someone else behind the scenes playing as bowser would make perfect sense. Also it fits with the fresh new theme of Wonder

Speaking of purple clouds and antasma; antasma’s powers usually manifest as a purple, cloud like substance, so maybe there’s a connect there, tho it might just be because purple often represents corruption.

It would honestly be interesting to see a different villain possessing Bowser and becoming the true final boss, kinda like how Kirby did it with Dedede getting possessed by Dark Matter in Dream Land 2 and 3.

It would be cool to see a different villain that's not Bowser in a mainline game again considering the last time we had something like that was in Super Mario Land 2, which was released 30 or 31 years ago (that's a pretty long time without a different villain tbh).

One thing I noticed is that on bowsers castle, he has the swirly cap on which is the same as the new toads of the flower kingdom

I think that there's probably either a new villain or maybe just Bowser using some new power, but honestly I hope that neither is the case and the Dark Star is back (as unlikely as that is).

The true villain is definitely related to the smoke, but I think this cloud enemy is actually unrelated.

I really hope if it is corruption, it’s not another Fury Bowser or another Black Paint Bowser and it is something controlling him or just all by itself.

I don’t know if it’s just me but Bowser Jr looks like he has the dark bowser colors, may be an important detail.

A new villain that is using the power of this dark energy to make Bowser and his minions fight for him before then being the true final boss would be cool.
