In this video we’re going to take a look at Horizon Technology Finance, ticker symbol HRZN. This is a pretty popular request that I get from people on YouTube as well as some people on our Patreon. So I figured it would be a good idea to go in depth on this stock and dedicate a video to it since it offers a lot of really attractive features. Their stock currently offers a dividend yield exceeding 11%, and it pays monthly dividends. Plus they also had a dividend increase less than a year ago. So let’s take a deeper look at HRZN and see if this is a stock worthy of consideration for investors seeking income or growth. With that being said, let’s get into it.

Horizon Technology Finance Corporation is a business development company that specializes in lending and investing in development-stage investments. They’re a leading provider of secured loans to venture capital-backed and private equity-backed growth-stage companies. They focus on making secured debt and venture lending investments to venture capital-backed companies in the technology, life science, healthcare information, and sustainability industries. Additionally they generate attractive risk-adjusted returns through additional capital appreciation through warrants. The company was founded in 2008 and had its IPO in 2010.

I have HRZN, and I really love it. The biggest reason I am an investor is because it's in my line of work. My primary fields are electrochemistry, molecular physics, chemical engineering, and materials science. In a sense, I see the work I do as pumping the stock. That said, I only buy this through my Roth. Not sure I'd buy it via my regular account.

I've had HRZN since 2020 and now it's my largest position in my monthly payer account, about 3% of my entire portfolio, which seems just right. It pays in the middle of the month, same as MAIN & O, which is handy. Thanks for the analysis!

Thanks. A new one I've just picked up is BXSL.. A real gem. Also, I get qualified dividends from 2 BDCs... OBDC and CION, although I don't hold a lot in the latter.

I have a small amount of HRZN. Buying a few a month with a goal of maybe 100 or so then will just DRIP 😂 I have a general target of 100 stock each of a list of higher paying dividend stocks. From there focus on DRIP and buy the ones which are performing well or use dividend to buy into slightly riskier plays so I don't feel like have lost anything if they do not perform as well as hoped. 😂

It is one of my smallest positions. I do like the company though. I just don't think it will ever be a large position in my portfolio.

Own it, and HGLB and TRIN. Only downside is not much div growth.

If you compound your dividend with the company and add to it every month the growth would be crazy

If there is a recession, which is much talked about, it will not be easy for this company. Now NASDAQ has started to move down. I'm still sitting on the fence and watching. I buy other larger issuers on drawdown. There is a choice. The same QQQX for example.

HRZN has had terrible Free Cash Flow for the past 5 quarters but have good debt for a BDC and over the past 5 quarters have had increasing net income.
PSECs is a close competitor to Horizon for the past 5 quarters they have Free Cash Flow for a BDC but over the past 5 quarters they have not so good net income.
