Consider that with machine learning there is a big difference between TRAINING regime and OPERATIONAL regime (i.e. inference). For training they need supercomputers running for weeks, while inference can be done within a single car in realtime. Training works by iterating many many times calculating the ERROR between PREDICTION and REALITY, then repetitively adjusting network weights to iteratively minimise that error. Once training is finished and the error is very small, for operation you only need the inexpensive inference prediction output from the neural network. Now while cross checking prediction/actual consistency between across several cameras can provide an ERROR signal for training a reasonable 3D model (i.e. prediction) of the world, a LIDAR 3D SCAN provdies a STRONGER ERROR signal that makes training more efficient and accurate. Musk's problem with LIDAR is that it doesn't scale well for inference since the hardware is expensive, fragile, and takes up a lot of physical space on the car roof, which is not aerodynamic. So it makes sense to use expensive LIDAR during the expensive TRAINING regime, but does not make sense for scaling the inexpensive OPERATIONAL regime.

Why can't Tesla make a traffic community for just Tesla owners like a Waze? Imagine Tesla owners reporting speed traps in real time. 😍

I had XM radio before when they was no ads. After the channels started adding ads, I discontinued them cause I refuse to pay premium fee for a service that isn’t better than what I can get for free from radio.

Hello Kim, big fan of your show, I am a ceramic engineer and work for an automotive glass company. The broken front window has two sheets of glass with a laminate in the middle. That’s why the glass and the window stayed intact even though it was broken. The glass is not bulletproof and we do do testing where we drop a large steel ball from an elevated height of 25 feet to check its strength. it’s very durable glass tempered glass is even stronger During tours, we drive a forklift across a curved front window it flexes, but it doesn’t break due to the compression layer develop during heating and super cooling. I hope this is helpful.

The latest FSD keeps slowing down on country single lane highways for no apparent reason. When the speed limit is 55 it frequently will slow down to 45 for no apparent reasons. Hope this is fixed.

Tesla in police use needs a lot of modification, but have a lot of advantages. We have a lot of idle time and the computers would benefit from the large battery pack. The only downside would apply to police agencies that use police vehicles in a "fleet" mode where they switch from officer to officer with no downtime to charge. Agencies that have "take home" cars could be charged at the officer's home, but would require a charger to be installed. Take home cars last much longer and allow more flexible schedules, faster shift change and the ability to field more officers faster. The cars would need to have protection for the Tesla's screen other software modifications as mentioned. The integrated cameras in the Tesla would save a lot of money over 3rd party systems and open source technology could be modified to offload the footage automatically to agency servers.

The LiDAR is for validation. It’s just to confirm what the computer is seeing and measuring with cameras is accurate.

I have had XM and SiriusXM on my last 3 cars and was a bit disappointed when I realized my new M3 didn't have it. There are a few options built into the Tesla that are ok but I would really appreciate getting my SiriusXM channels back!

IMO the FSD subscription should include premium connectivity. And buying FSD outright you get say 5 years of it included. Just something extra to sweeten the deal on FSD. The main reason premium connectivity take rate is so low is because standard connectivity is so damn good.

The law enforcement settings would be such a good idea, and I could see Teslas being really beneficial as police vehicles with the extra torque and control response to help them keep up. The settings would be SO easy to push in an exclusive software update!

I’m a fan of XM. I use it all the time for news and music. For me, the appeal is specifically that it doesn’t require cell service and it doesn’t cut out when traveling in remote areas. Therefore, the actual XM hardware would be important to me. Pulling it out of S and X would make the cars less appealing.

I don't understand the problem with needing premium connectivity for some features. It's $10/month for God's sake. If you can't afford the 10 bucks, you probably shouldn't be buying a Tesla.

BTW, if you’re replacing tires more often it’s the way you’re driving. I have a 3 and Y and replaced their factory tires at ~45, 000 miles. That’s a normal time.

Love your show. Would argue that the Kia EV9 in the Land and GT Trim is more “luxurious” than a Model X! My Plaid rattles and seats are just okay; the Kia EV9 makes no interior noises; the materials and layout appear higher quality than my Teslas and the seats are fantastic in the EV9. Much more comfortable and supple than my Teslas.

100% agree with the cops on the lack of ability to do basic functions like dimming lights (which we do approaching the gates on base) and the car doing smart-stuff I don’t want, like complaining about the hatch being open when I’m backing up or going into park if I lift my butt too high when twisting to see backwards. I’ve gone back to a basic pickup truck 4x4 stick shift to tow my boat because the Y software is such a massive fail. It’s clearly made for basic drivers who might add a bike rack, not for professionals.
