Wow! Tell us more! I love educational bee videos! There was a bee lingering on my parked motorcycle close to sunset and I learned that they need to make it home before nightfall but this one was looking tired and walking slow and couldn't fly. I didn't have sugar water on me, so I gave it some sweet potato pie filling and caramel from a candy bar and a little drop of apple juice I had. It took to eat with ferocity and it finally gathered the strength to buzz its wings and hopefully fly home! Sorry for the long story but even as a grown man, seeing the little guy/girl struggling to get home made me sad. I guess it maybe it reminds me of myself. Anyhow thank you!

Learn something new every day. Didn’t know bees could get mites. Mind blowing.

When I got on YouTube I didn’t expect to see a tutorial on how to waterboard honey bees.

Bees are outside the hives, all in one place, which means they either flew there willingly to die and protect the hive, or were carried there to die and protect the hive.

For those of you that do not know, or are new to beekeeping. CCD (Colony, Collapse, Disorder) is a big issue with Honey bee colonies. There are a few different issues that are believed to be the cause of CCD, those being chemical contamination of colony food stores and/or beeswax due to pollution, poisoning from pesticides, possible lack of genetic diversity, stress due to the consistent migrating of hives by commercial bee keepers, plus a few more theories of the cause. All of those issues mentioned definitely play a role in the cause of CCD. Though the main major issue is, the Mite shown in this gentleman's video. Varroa destructor, varroa mite attacks and feeds on the honeybee, it can only reproduce and live in a honeybee colony, its not the mite itself necessarily that takes out the colony, but all of the disease and viruses that it vectors. Varroa came to Notth America on the Asian honey bee in the mid 1980s and has been a growing problem ever since. The Asian honeybee has lived with it for hundreds of years and has evolved a variety of natural defences against the mite. The European honey bee has not. Anyway its a major issue in the world of honeybees and beekeeping.

I've never heard of a mite on a bee.

Probably too late to save the colony with that many mites.

I've seen a bee keeper I follow, lightly tossed handful of juvenile bees in powdered sugar and it helps the mites fall off and less casualties and the other bees can help clean the sugar off.

They’re sacrificing themselves to save the colony’s hive. 🐝

I'm thinking that people don't realize just how important bees are for life on earth. Thank you for educating us.

The bees may be handling the problem, but your hive definitely needs to be mite treated.

Though this is so sad to me, I think it is absolutely incredible the things bees instinctively know to do for every situation. Truly mind blowing.

That hive has thousands of bees, those few that died for the test is better than losing them all.

Why not use a sticky mite board to monitor mite drops? You can speed up the bee's natural grooming tendacies by dusting with powder sugar. Personally, I like the old English method of "re-hiving" them every spring by just dumping out all bee's and taking all comb. They build back fresh with no infestation bc it breaks the mite lifecycle. This also stops swarms in spring.... which if you think about it...the swarm is the bee's natural defense to all this AND we (keepers) love interring and stopping them.
