It’s been a while since Canon had a product release that excited filmmakers. Well, I think the just-announced Canon C200 cinema camera will stir up a lot of interest in the filmmaking community.

It is great to see the Canon C200 priced at the level of the BlackMagic URSA Mini 4.6K. In this video I compare these two cameras to see whether the C200 can dethrone the URSA Mini 4.6K as the best budget (and best value) cinema camera.

You can get the Canon C200 at

Also the URSA Mini Pro at

Body: 1-1
Canon C200 has 2 pro Audio XLR connections, buttons to control the main camera settings. Weighs only 3.2lbs
Also has built in ND filters with 2-46 stops and also expandable 8 and 10 stops.

URSA has pro audio and all the same controls including built in NDs but those are only 2-4-6 stops.
Also the URSA is bigger in size and weighs 5.1lbs, plus to really use it you have to add the battery plate and Vmount or Anton Bauer botteries which weight a lot more than Canon's batteries.

URSA has a built in touch screen LCD, with the basic Canon C200 you don't get that unless you buy it sepeteratly, but the C200 has a EVF which the URSA doesn't have unless again you buy it seperately.

Now the URSA has 2 SDI out ports, also has SDI in and timecode in. I would say both camera have eaqual value in that department.

I scored each camera based on different categories. Read below to see what I thought of each.

Recording Media: 0-1
Canon C200 has dual SD Cards and 1 Cfast.

URSA
Dual SD and Dual Cfast.

Codec: 0-1
Canon C200 uses new Canon Cinema RAW Light which is so far only supported in Davinci Resolve or also in Avid using a plugin. Records in 12 bit in 4K up to 30fps or 10bit at 60fps.
It's compressed so it gives you more recording time than Canon Cinema Raw. About 15min of 4K on a 128GB CFast Card.
Otherwise you will need to transcode it to other formats using Canon's CRD software. Can capture the full 15 stops of light.

Also records in MP4 codecs at 150Mbps in 4K and 35mbps HD at 8Bit.

URSA Records in industry standard Cinema DNG and also compressed DNG which at this time are also not supported outside of Davinci Resolve. 12 bit up to 4K 60fps.
Also in Apple Pro Res all flavours.

Slow Motion: 1-0
Canon C200 can go up to 120fps in HD and in 4K up to 60fps same as URSA Mini. Except ursa Mini crops in when shooting in 120fps so your field of view changes.

ISO: 1-0
C200 goes up to 25600 and Canon claims it's usable up to that range. With expandable ISO it goes up to 102400.
URSA goes up to ISO 1600 and that's it.

Auto Focus: 1-0
C200 has Canon's amazing Dual Pixel AF system.

URSA has no AF at all.

Image quality: 1-1
C200 can capture up to 15 stops of dynamic range and in 12bit 4K so can the URSA Mini. Will the cameras look different from each other? of course!
I would say the quality is great on both cameras it just comes down to your prefrence.

Final Score!
Canon C200 gets 5 points and URSA gets 4

Thanks for this, Tom! Pretty exciting. Having used Canon cameras exclusively before purchasing an Ursa Mini Pro, I'd given up on Canon when it came to 4K cinema cameras tailored to the independent filmmaking crowd. When the C200 is available for testing, I'm looking forward to seeing how well the sensor performs in low light settings, and how the footage from the C200 and UMP cut together.

Smash that like button!! Couldn't agree more Tom could this be a new dawning for Canon making things more affordable? I hope so

The c200's DPA can be used for manual focus too. It's a new focus assist that tells you how close you are to focusing on the point which you touched on the touch screen. Uses a much more precise system than peaking on the Ursa Mini

I've had my heart set on an Ursa Mini for ages, coming from a GH4 and A7Sii I was always turned off at how expensive Canon is comparatively but i'm honestly blown away with the specs of the C200. I never expected Canon to give us DCI 4K, Raw and high frame rates, built in nd in a package under 10k

Size and battery, no crop slomo, touchscreen Raw and price. C200 for me.

Great unbiased comparison. One big point not mentioned for the Canon is capturing 2k proxies of the 4k raw files. I don't remember if the BM does something similar but it's a big deal. You rock!

If I am not mistaken, the Canon can record 4K RAW in camera. The Ursa requires an external device (such as Atomos). So one big extra point to Canon on this. Right?

Perfect comparison Tony! I am buying a Canon C200B because the Arri Alexa mini image you can get from it with a LUT and minor color corrections. Best camera in the market in the last 3 years. Much better image quality than the EOS R5. 🥇

Great AF, lightweight, good post work flow, smaller raw files, great form factor, no worries about getting a bad copy unlike bm. C200 for me. Please do a CF to SSD rigging video for C200 ?

Can C200 record on atamos shogun inferno? Also isn't canon way better shooting in low light compared to ursa mini?

Concerning the new C200, do you think the lack of 4:2:2 10-bit will matter in regards to broadcast standards, or do you think the C200 will still be a great camera to do tv and broadcast productions? I know it shoots 4K @ 12-bit, but I've heard this won't meet "broadcast standards" according to networks like BBC & Viacom. Idk if this is bullshit or not.

What is expanded 8 and 10 stops for the ND filter? Electronic instead of physical?

Doesn't the ursa mini pro have interchangeable lens mount? That's a point right there, no? (if it does).

I like to see a image comparison to the GH5. Especially to see the difference from 10 to 13 stops. Also the image quality while shoot in 4k60p and HD120p. How much it is visible?

Doesn't the Ursa mini shoot uncompressed raw and if so isn't that better than the compressed "lite raw" Canon provides?

In full hd, which color depth does get? 8 or 10 bit? 422 or 420? Thank you.
