Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K vs Canon C200

Our Multimedia Editor Dom steps out from behind the camera for the first time to, um, get behind the camera: he shows off some demo shots comparing the RAW dynamic range of the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC) and our studio regular Canon C200.

I'm not an expert but it doesn't seem like there's enough contrast in this scene to really put the dynamic range capabilities of either camera to the test.

whys is the so much noise in the c200?

Okay, I get it is not a test in lab conditions, but it is pointless if the BMPCC4k is out of focus???

The side-by-side looks like the focus is a bit soft on the BMPCC. Is that the case?

I thought the P4K would have better dynamic range, but not by that much. It looks like 1-2 stops cleaner shadows on the P4K.
Maybe try a more challenging situation with a bright window in the background and expose ETTR style.

BMPCC 4K naturally over-saturates blues, but especially reds. If you put a gamut limiter on the footage in post or apply a color space transform to a flatter color space like Arri alexa or perhaps C200, you may find the only difference is level of grain and dynamic range. C200 is great, but BMPCC 4K with a little work can look phenomenal.

You can't expose clog 2 the same way you expose braw. That's why you have alot of noise in the c200 image.

This test didn't do much for me. Highlight recovery test comparison in raw would've been more helpful

It is not fair when you didn't explain what lens did you used on the bmpcc and if is a native MFT or an adapter. A lot of things we have to consider on this shots. I have the BMPCC 4k and is way better than what you showed here.

Thanks for posting your test. That C200 noise at 1:10 is pretty bad... otherwise things look pretty comparable.

The C200 is less saturated in this test, but it means little in reality as grading would change its preset look anyway.

what lens did you use with the blackmagic? looks softer than other videos on yt of that camera.
