Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

EVE Online has consumed thousands of hours and the better part of a decade of my life. I've done a little bit of more or less everything there is to offer in the game. Highsec, lowsec, nullsec, wormholes. I've been part of massive fleets, fought in giant wars, destroyed enormous ships, and contributed to the greatest shared universe in sci-fi history.

And I don't regret a moment of it.

But the last three years of changes CCP has made to their game have been nothing short of catastrophic. "Scarcity" ripping the heart out of the economy of the game, "balance" changes that destroy entire playstyles, "abyssal" content perverting the single-shard nature of the game and taking an already dwindling playerbase even further out of space. Raising the subscription price 34%, something almost no other MMO has done, after refusing to add substantive content to the game for almost three years is just the final slap in the face.

I quit the game, along with most of the members of the corporation I am proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to build and run, a year ago after CCP sold out their IP with the Doctor Who event. Seeing CCP continue to refuse to acknowledge the poor state of their game as it struggles to pass 20,000 peak concurrent users has only reinforced the idea that this was the right decision.

It's a tough call, and I still love the hell out of EVE Online. It's my favourite game and, in my humble opinion, the single greatest game ever created. But EVE isn't dying - EVE is dead. I miss it, I mourn it, and yet I bury it.

This video is dedicated to good times with good people, to all of the amazing things the EVE community has accomplished together. Though not all of us are here to appreciate it, the memory of what we built will live on long after the world we built it in ceases to exist.

Here's hoping we get it back someday.
