25 Ways I Save Money on Bills

My Favorite Personal Finance Books

The cost of living has been increasing drastically. Gas prices are high, rent is going up, and inflation is at an all time high. Despite the rising prices, it is still possible to save money and keep life affordable.

In this video I talk about 25 ways to save money on bills.

1. Budget

If you do not create a budget, you are living life by chance. Determine how much money you have for rent, food, and all your expenses so you can live off of your salary and not overspend.

2. Track every purchase you make

It is important to create an excel sheet to document all of your purchases down to the penny. Once you know how much you are spending, you can cut out certain areas.

3. How much is work costing you?

Work is not free. You spend money in gas, food, and other expenses while you are working. Determine how much you spend to work because work could be costing you a lot of money.

4. Don’t Underestimate Saving $1

When it comes to saving, it is much easier to save $1 than $100, try to make small decisions to save $1 and it will add up over time.

5. Health Care

You can save money on health care simply by taking better care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, and live with less stress. You will not know how much you will save, but you will save.

6. Gas Buddy

Gas buddy is an app you can download that will show you the cheapest gas prices in your area.

7. Drive Intentional

Gas is very expensive right now. You can save money by driving less and planning your trips better.

8. Lower Internet Speed

Internet companies normally charge in plans of different "mbps." The higher the "mbps" doesn't mean that your internet is faster, check your plan and see if you can lower your speed.

9. Ditch Internet router fees

Some internet companies want you to rent their router; however, this is a complete waste of money as you can avoid the fee and buy your own.

10. Use Mint Mobile

Mint mobile is a cellphone company that cheapest plan is $15/month. If you are spending more than $15/month, consider switching to Mint.

11. Lower your cell phone data

Unless you are an Uber driver or use a bunch of data, you do not need unlimited data phone plan. There is WiFi just about everywhere.

12. Look For Installment fees

Certain bills, like car insurance, charge installment fees, which can be avoided if you pay the bills in full every payment period.

13. Turn off the lights

I keep my electricity bill low simply by turning off the lights in the day time.

14. Buy Clothes at discount stores

You can save a lot of money on clothing by shopping at discount stores. You can also save money by not caring how you look.

15. Don’t cool every room in the house

If you use air conditioning, you do not need to cool down every single room in the house.

16. Gym Memberships

You cannot spend your way into good health. It is unnecessary to spend hundreds of dollars on a cross fit gym when there are cheap gyms.

17. Drop some streaming services

If you have multiple subscriptions to streaming services, you can save money by getting rid of a few and using free ones, like YouTube.

18. Drop Useless Subscriptions

There is a subscription for just about everything nowadays. Majority of subscription services are unnecessary and you can save money by unsubscribing.

19. Stop being soft

20 years ago we didn't have grocery delivery apps, uber eats, and other convenience apps. You can save a lot of money just by doing things yourself.

20. You save 100% if you don’t buy it

Sales are often just marketing strategies and you should not buy something just because it is on sale.

21. Consume Less

The cost of living has increased because of many factors, but a big factor is because we are consuming more than ever. If you do not consume a lot, you can save a lot of money.

22. Never Use Payment plans

No interest payment plans are very popular right now, but if you cannot afford something and go with a payment plan, you are setting yourself up to be behind.

23. Live Below Your Means

If you get a bonus or a raise that does not mean that you should be spending more. Do not base your spending off of your salary.

24. Do it for yourself

Do not buy things to impress other people because the reality is nobody cares about what you have. If you want something nice, do it for yourself and not for other people.

25. Don’t go where the hipsters go

Just kidding, but hipster and trendy places often have much higher prices than other places!

EXACTLY Austin! Over consuming is the problem. There was never a shortage of toilet paper for example. The problem was people hoarding it. We drive the market with our greed.

I’m so proud of myself. I woke up a few hours early and binge watched 12 of your videos because I had to catch up from the work week. Right now I’m working full-time at my job and part-time on my fortune, but I’m very very excited for the journey. Watching your videos has made me learn to enjoy it and keep going.

I was at a car dealer recently. And that car salesman said. People can be mad at us… or at shortage.. or inflation.. but they don’t look in the mirrors. As long as they keep coming here in the shops and buy and buy and buy.. than we are stupid when we’re lowering the sticker price. And he was so right. Yes things are to expensive.. but not the shops or companies or the world keep them expensive. We are doing it to ourselves. Stop consuming! Stop buying new cars or some other materials because you want something else or just to treat yourself. Only buy something when you really really need it because there’s no option. . If we keep consuming wants than it never will be beter only worst. Now it’a the time to just look at our needs

I was pressured by my co-workers to use Uber eats etc..If I don't join the group order, I will be outcast and look down by them as a broke person .But I wasted alot of money on food deliveries . In the end, I resigned and found a better company with financially savvy co-workers.

I don't pay for power (solar panels), in fact the power company pays me about $70 a month for the excess power I make.
I don't have home internet, streaming services or subscriptions.
I ride my bike more than I drive my car.
I don't eat meat, it's really cheap to be vegetarian.
I only buy secondhand clothes.
I don't have health insurance, in Australia you don't really need it.
I live well below the poverty line and life is good.

I am from U.K, we are going through exactly the same issues as yourselves, I just discovered your channel and it's very good. I have been living on a small budget for most of my married life and kind of most of what you have been talking about I have implemented for years, I've had to do it, I encourage those who are starting out in married life to work hard at budgeting, it will keep your stress levels down, save you money, and maybe save your relationship. Keep doing what you are doing Austin.👍😊

People never learn ....Charles Dickens our famous English writer in the 1860s wrote....“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery”

“You save 100% if you do not buy it”, I love that. I think people need to essentially ask themselves just one question before buying something on sale. Would I buy this if it wasn’t on sale? If the answer is not a resounding YES, then you probably don’t need it. Or at-least, you don’t need it right away. This gives you leverage since you can wait around for better deals instead of making an impulsive purchase. Great video Austin!

Great video. I'll slightly disagree with you on delivery and/or pickup for groceries. Utilizing these services once a week, I end up saving a lot more than I did in grocery stores. Why? Because it removes impulse buys. It allows me to add or remove items on a list throughout the week until "grocery day." And most importantly, it allows me to meet a maximum amount in real time. If I go over said amount, I remove an item or two.
