Great review. Appreciate the real-world writing including the railroading and skip/non-start. Thanks for not editing out.

Thanks for the review Garry. Enjoyable. Just received an Asvine P20 also a Leonardo inspired piston filler at a reasonable price. Feels good in the hand and the medium writes great. The Wing Sung 698 is the only pen I have ever thrown in the garbage. My gold nib was terrible and my pen cracked when I removed the nib and feed to clean.

I also am a fan of the 308, particularly with the Waverly (mini-fude) nib. The other Chinese pen I would recommend is the Jinhao 82, but I believe it falls into the lower price category.

Love the Jinhao 100, though mine is a Fine and I'm wanting to swap that for a Medium. Same for the Moonman M800. I would also recommend the Moonman A1 or A2 for a fun retractable pen. Though they ONLY come in extra fine :(

Very good selection. Like the M800, I just haven't gotten into the Jinhao 100. I love Jinhao pens but the 100 just doesn't work for me.

As for penBBS, all of their pens show innovation and usually great writers. Yes, nib selection is limited. When I saw the 495 with the mini fude nib, I had to get one. I hope you have it on your list to get.

I never got the Asvine V169 but I have there other vacuum filler (V129?). I really like their pens. I have other pens that do not work with certain inks. Perhaps it is not a lubricating ink or it dries very quickly.

I never bought the Wing Sung 698. I opted for the penBBS 456 instead. I think I like the section better. Personal preference. I did get the Wing Sung 630 with the gold nib. It is a lovely writer. There is a steel nib version for about $100 US less expensive. Like other pens there is a limited selection of nibs - EF, F, or M.

The Jinhao 9019 should be on your list as should be the Hong Dian D1. If you go to 365Days Stationary Store, there are multiple nib options for the D1.

Great review even though the pens didn't cooperate.

I have a couple of pens in this category where I've switched out the nib for a Jowo M or B.

That Wing Sung (or Yong Sheng? Why Chinese brands have two names!) 698 looks appetizing, just to try a gold nib.
From this review and the fact that the same pen is available with a steel nib, it seems that the manufacturer did not adapt the feed to better suit the ink flow for the gold nib, but just re-use the same feed-for-steel-nib, which is a shame.

Garry, mate the prices you quote are they current? 🇦🇺

Strange that your lesser priced pen wrote better than the more expensive. This is the primary reason I do not spend money on more expensive pens. When I buy a pen I actually want them to write reliably. Am I asking too much?

JINHAO and ASVINE are far better brands than Hong Dian. Thanks for this interesting review.
