8. Learning to code C/C++ with Arduino: Pull up and Pull down resistors

So I may need some lessons in physics/circuitry, but I don't understand why the flow of electricity doesn't just travel in the path it previously did the entire time. Does the new circuit complete of the button just attract electricity to go through a new path? I also thought that having a button meant an incomplete circuit until pressed, so why does it always read as one?

From the way you explained it, it seemed as if the circuit is complete regardless of whether the button is pressed or not.
