I doubt that the audience couldn't connect with him emotionally, I think it's because Disney knew who would watch this movie and did want the main character to be a fox.

In case anyone is wondering the plot it would have had with Nick as the main character was this: In zootopia to make sure no preds do anything bad to the prey they have to wear tame collars which was a shock collar that went off when they felt any emotions even sadness and scariness and the prey treated the preds pretty badly by making them scared because they know they can’t do anything about it because they will get shocked. Nick still sells the pawsicles like in the movie but he doesn’t make much money and has to live in some basement or something. One day Nick has to go to the nurse (I forgot why) and for medical reasons they have to take off his collar, Nick felt so happy he imagined himself on a roller foster which gave him a idea. His plan was to make a nursery that was secretly a amusement park for preds so they could take off their collar he named it wild times. He needs a loan to let this happen but he keeps getting declines until he goes to some bank that accepts. But eventually he has debt he has to pay off. Some time passes but and Judy Hopps is revealed she has to investigate wild times because they noticed so many people watching in and out that it wasn’t normal so Nick shows her a fake medical degree and she believes it until someone walks out of the secret door then she lets it go until the next night where she goes in to investigate it more and she tells chief bogo. In the meantime Nick pays off his debt and everything is all good until a wolf shoots Nick with one of those guns that puts you to sleep but instead of putting him to sleep it makes him go savage. The police came because Judy told them about wild times and locked him up because he was trying to bite prey but he somehow escapes. Nick is running away but Judy is chasing him and like in the movie that came out where Judy is chasing that weasel in the tiny town it’s the exact same but the weasel is Nick and Nick puts the donut onto Judy. Judy finds Nick and handcuffs him and her together but sense she is so small it doesn’t really matter so he shoots her with a dart pistol(like the one Nick was shot with but it does put you to sleep) he hides her in his hat because he can’t just walk around with a bunny attached to him. Some stuff happens and Nick and Judy get tied up together but he picks the lock and they fall up upside down together and a notebook with license plates and addresses from the people who tied them up fell out of her pocket so they get out of the rope and go under those moving table things at restaurants and they are at a taming party where a polar bear is getting its tame collar he feels really happy and gets shocked and is sad Nick and Judy see all of this and she feels bad. They escape but get attacked, Judy gets hit by the darts and Nick saves her and they both go somewhere safe they both decide to team up to find the wolf that shot Nick. Judy did actually get an address and they go there and it was that character that went savage in the original film that went away once chief bogo tried to look at it and we was helpful Judy took off his collar and he said he was driving a wolf around but sense his shock collar was off he attacked them and he bit Nick which triggered his shock collar and he fell in a river Judy tried to save him but she fell to and there was a waterfall. Nick got knocked out but when he woke up he was in a wheat field and he didn’t have his collar on he was so happy he just started to run around then he woke up(meaning he was dreaming) and was surrounded by many bunnies meaning Judy brought him to her home town, the bunnies ask him many questions which makes him notice not all prey are bad Judy takes Nick to her room and says all the preds that went savage where not wearing their collar do Judy wants to test this theory by making a key that can take off the collars and she says she will take off Nicks, Nick ask how she isn’t scared and she said she just trust him. They go back to Zootopia and she finds night howlers some sheep come and try to steal it from them and the fall but land on something soft. They run really far away and the sheep get arrested. Just did or said something that made Nick sad/mad (I forgot sorry). Judy feels really bad and wants to fix her mistakes so she tracks down Nick and says she is sorry and she forgives so they come up with a plan. Also Nick tells her about his childhood and how his father tried to open a store but kept getting rejected when trying to get a loan but they had to move away from the city and open it in a trashy building. Anyways their plan is to sneak into to oasis and prove to everyone what’s happening but they see preds chief bogo locked up. Guards come and try to arrest them they sort of get out of it through. They swing over and fall onto the stage and people are scared when the see a fox with a bunny so they throw food to protect Judy. But Nick still has that key that unlocks the tame collars so he uses it to take it off. He gives a speech in front of everyone saying how preds and preys are both animals. Some tigers come and try to attack them and Nick even gets shot with that dart gun that makes him go savage but instead of killing Judy he uses that to protect her by attacking the tigers instead. The End. Thank you for your time and congrats if you read that entire thing much appreciated that took me two hours to write lol

It wasn't changed because audiences couldnt connect with Nick, it was changed because the world from Nick's perspective was a bit too depressing

Duke Weaselton sounds like The Duke of Weasel Town or The Duke of Whistleton from Frozen
